I just received seeds for Artemisia glacialis and have seeds for A.a. and A genepi on the way. What sort of conditions do they like, i.e. quantity of sun and soil conditions?

Hm, I'd heard glacialis was a bit hard to
come by.
Congrats if I'm right for 1nce.

If what you have is truly what you say it is (How do you REALLY know) it might be tough to get it to "sprout".

From my understanding the seeds are pretty tough to get going. Live plants are the way to go.

As for climate. The plants you listed are from alpine areas. So they like it relatively dry, with tough soil. I'd avoid areas that are too hot or in the sun for the entire day.

The A.A. Will grow anywhere. It's a weed. So that should be no problem.

I am fairly confident that the seeds are as named. They came from B & T World Seeds. But as you say, how do you know for sure.

The A.A. Will grow anywhere.

Nope. It needs well-drained soil or it'll just whither. I know - I've got a side of my garden with clay ground, and the other just has sandy soil, and the A. a. doesn't want to grow in the clay.

I assume it also likes basic soil rather than acid soil, but it appears less picky in that respect.

...all right then. It'll grow almost anywhere. It will however, do better in drier well drained soil.

I planted some up on the hill to the west of the hous late last fall. I'm curious to see if it comes up this year. I have half the seeds left in case nothing comes up.

I suppose I should try peat cups to start the seeds in and then trans plant them.

I think I'm gonna plant some in the front yard. It's the perfect spot for growing, plus it'll make a nice decorative shrub.

Mug wort (common) Artemesia Vulgaris
Modern uses:
The leaves and roots are used.
It is a remedy for scanty menstruation and is taken as an infusion in teaspoonful doses. 1 teaspoon to a cup of boiling water.
As a nervine it is useful for convulsions, a teaspoon powdered , is taken with water three times a day.
In the seventeenth century Nicholas Culpeper wrote:The fresh herb or juice is a remedy for the taking of too much opium. The powdered leaves taken in wine is a speedy and certain help for sciatica

How vulgar.

I told my wife I was making 'Wormwood Wings' the other night. The loos reference to the russian word for wormwood escaped her.

The wings weren't hot enough. I only used 1/4 cup of home made hab sauce, 1tsp hab extract (Krakatoa) and a half bottle of another hab sauce. Dropped the wings in the sauce and let them set for 20 minutes while I got th oil hot. Rolled the wings in flower, salt and pepper, and fried them.

Next time I'm using a full Tablespoon of Krakatoa.

Wormwood (sea) Artemisia Maritima
Modern uses:
This possesses similar properties as A.A. and A.P. but not as potent as the first.
It is usually used as a substitute to artemesia absinthium by country people who know its virtues. The flowering tops are collected and dried and given as an infusion for digestive problems. It is also useful for intermittent fever. Prolonged use is not recommended.
Cullpeper said " Hysteric complaints have been cured by this tinctture. In scurvy and in hypochondriacal disorders few remedies have greater effect than when this is taken in strong infusion."

Yup. Chernobyl Hot wings. Except they were not as hot as I had hoped. For some reason, frying them seems to moderate the heat of the sauce. Tasty any way.

I consider wings to be fried chicken. Fried chicken, you eat just the way it comes out of the frier.

We used to eat a lot of chicken wings and livers when I was young. They used to be the cheapest cuts of chicken till someone made them a snack food and ruined it.

The Artemesia (Powis Castle) that I planted last year seems to have died after my having cut it back to near ground level. The other Attemesia in the yard that were not cut back survived.

So much for cutting it back.

No sign of the A.A. coming up where I sowed seeds last fall. I'll try putting the rest in peat cups and see if they will sprout.

The Veronica Offiicialis is sprouting after having been cut back.

In the future, I'm going to try trimmin it back in stages to allow some branches to recover and keep some of it fresh at all times.

Winter this year didn't get below about 8f, so I'm not sure this will work druing a bad winter. I'll just have to cover it with straw or something if it gets really cold.

I've seen a lot of Dusty Miller (Artemisia Stelleriana) around here that no one protects. It doesn't aexactly thrive in clay soil, but it seems to hold it's own.

Screw the organ meat, give me something I can chew! That or fry it hard enough to make it chewy (I've had mountain oysters that were more than a little soft in the middle -- not bad till you think of what is soft -- no good!). Liver and kidney can't be cooked enough in my opinion.

My A.A. seeds sprouted with vigor a couple of weeks ago. The sprouts are about 1" tall now. My Hyssop seeds haven't done squat. Heirloom Seeds, where I got these from, said the A.A. would be more finicky. They also said hyssop could take 3 weeks to sprout, but its been at least that long now. I have the two plug tray deal coming from Richters, 90 plugs of A.A.
And a dozen A.P's . I'm making a border with it , all around my garden,
that should keep those pesky deer out of it.
With the climate here in the mountains it should be some pretty fragrant stuff.

I hadn't thought of that Kirk. Might be a good Idea. We have a yearling doe that has taken up residence near our house. This wouldn't be unusual at my last house since I was right near Buffalo mountain. However, I am well inside the city now. TWRA does not capture and relocate deer and bear unless they are an immediate threat to people. They told me to ignore it and hope it goes away.

My experience is that every Artemisis loves abuse. I have, in the past, had it grow in clay. It does not enjoy it, but it can grow in it. It does not enjoy super fortified soils but does like soil that drains. I think fertilized soils are too "rich" for it. It loves sun. The more the better. It is a high alpine plant, and it grows wild here(CO). It likes desert-type conditions. We use it for xeriscaping here. Our botanical gardens at this moment have a plethora of different Artemisis decorating the grounds.
It germinates in 10 days in soil temps 60 degrees and above.
Once established you only have to water it once every few days. Maybe once a week. Trim back in the spring.
It is different depending on where you live though. Some could have been growing over a month ago, our snow showers just stopped, growing season just started for me. yay. Gardening is good for the soul.

We seem to have mostly dusty miller used in beds around here.

I planted some AA that arrived from Richters this week, and it seem to be taking well. No A.P. this year. They stated that the crop had failed.

One of the Angelica plants was either damaged in shipping or by my rough handling, and it looks like it won't make it.

The Veronica wintered over well and apparently propagates by rhizomes. There are small clusters popping up 6" away from the original plant.

So, has anyone tried AA and AP in a hot, arid climate? Like the desert Southwest?

I'm thinking about planting them in my very narrow east-facing side yard. Canyonesque effect, with the neighbor's 5-foot block wall on the east side, and my house 7-8 feet west of that. Direct sun for probably 2-3 hours a day, and good indirect light the rest of the day.

I imagine they could do nicely on rainfall over there, other than the establishment period, and the "hot-dry" period, May-June. During the "hot-wet" period they'd be thrilled (mid July-early Sept), and after that it's "dry-warm" to "dry-cool".

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

No, but I lived there for a good while. I would think, being the tank of a plant that it is, Artemisis would do fine in Arizona.
It certainly is a very hot loving plant.
I do not know that it would fully happy on the tiny amount of rainfall though.
Maybe water it once a week to start, untill it is established? It isn't like it NEEDS that much water.
But it is in a "cool" area of your yard? It may be fine on just the rainfall once it is established as a happy plant.
Just my thought.
I want to feel the change consume me.

That is good sun for any plant.

I already have an itty bitty 1-gallon pomegranate planted in the backyard. Full sun. Of course, like many of my plants, it's currently in the "struggling to survive" phase.

One of my professors called me "the South American dictator of landscape architecture" because I'm very tough on my plants. They only get a certain amount of water, and had better learn to LOOK for water quickly. If they don't do well, they might get relocated, but usually just die. The pomegranate has been difficult lately -- dropped all its leaves a couple of weeks ago -- but now it's finally finding the water and leafing out again.

Makes for more drought-resistant plants, ya see. They have a better root system if they have to go looking for water, and they don't grow faster than they ought.

I'm very tough on my plants....Makes for more drought-resistant plants, ya see.  They have a better root system if they have to go looking for water, and they don't grow faster than they ought.

Figure out the way of the cholla, barrel cacti and saguaro or die.
I like that.
Makes good sense to make the plant fight that way, esp. considering where you live. The desert is a hard place. I had similar problems getting ginko to take here in CO.
Ginko is supposed to do very well here, but it is just finiky as all hell.

I am unsure to be honest. Perhaps. Adolph is on his own if he wants to avoid being composted in the desert.
It may be helpful for the pomegranite come to think of it though, might solve the moisture issue at least for a season. ;)

Well, I went out to my parents place to check on my plants yesterday. Since I planted them 2 weeks ago, there has been almost constant rain. The A. glacialis isn't looking to happy at the moment. The A. pontica looks somewhat better and the A.a. is setting in quite well. If we could only keep the sun around long enough for the A. glacialis to get established, I would be a happy man.

I just planted a little sproutling slopeside amongst a bazilion weeds in the parking lot at work. This soil has got to be the shittiest around. Let's see if the little sucker can transform a 1/2 acre of misc. weeds into a half acre of glorious wormwood.

In looking at one photograph of the harvesting of A.A., I think I have planted mine too close together. It appears that they were planted about 2-3' apart for normal cultivation. Mine are only about 18" apart. I might dig one up an move it.

They seem to be taking to the local conditions pretty well, and have almost trippled in size since planting.

Most of the Hyssops sprouts died during my vacation. I'll try starting more from seeds.

Now that the AP colored batch has aged for several months, it is loosing the earthy flavor and mellowing quite nicely. AP is not the best choice for coloration, but I think it is certainly a much better choice than A.A.

My AP died over the winter.

I have a 5 year old plant though so I cut about a hundred branches off it,
stuck them in water for about two weeks and they all sprouted,
I set them out last week and they're looking good.
Next year will be a good year.
I don't know why I'm growing all this.

That reminds me. I need to go to (EVIL) Wally Land after work and try to find rooting compound.

My brother runs a nursery where he raises potted plants (wholesale) to sell to a couple of stores. He told me that he uses sand and rooting compound and can grow just about anything from a clipping. I'm going to try it. (yea, like I need another hobby.)

And you promised not to publish the Pontarlier recipe! That's the last time he will divulge any recipes to you!

Be careul with that rooting compound.

It is made up of growth hormone
and pesticides with anti fungals and algae killer.
I don't think a significant amount could end up in a mature plant though.
You don't need it, just keep the cuttings in clean water until they sprout roots.,

Should I leave my A.a. in the pots this winter and plant them in the ground in spring?
OR
Do I plant them now and let them winter in the ground?

Your ass (US spelling) isn't two-dimensional, and I thought we agreed it was a truncated pyramid.

Or if it's really trapezoidal: do you mean it looks like a trapezoidal icositetrahedron?
