I've been extremely disappointed with the Russian River "belgians" -- especially their so called overpriced lambic style "wild ales." One-dimentional and either over-hopped or more likely using hop varieties that simply don't belong. It's kinda like Peter Shaft made up these recipes.

However, "Pliny the Elder" is some good xit.

Recently "replicated" Fantome Printemps.

G&C knew the last one as "Sooper Sour Saison." This time, hopefully won't be nearly as sour and won't blow up when you crack the cap... won't pitch Brett and Lacto to the secondary this time...

Found one of the original "Sooper Sour Saisons" the other day, a bit better than it was 4 years ago as it tastes like straight up lemon juice...

I am drinking the Grand Cru. It's probably 7 or more years old and probably bottled more than 5 years ago...

Still slightly carbonated with tiny bubbles, not carbonated enough to form a head. I'm very suprised as it's mellowed out significantly. It's lost the "I'm eating fresh human excrement" quality (which actually wasn't a bad thing, initially.) Slight fruitiness that reminds me of sour cherries and currants. Sweeted up, not soured over time. Perfect dark brown-reddish color with chunky yeast at the end. Pretty good xit.

Saison Brett - I originally bought two bottles prolly about 3 years ago. Tried the first one within about a month of purchase and absolutely no Brett qualities, no sourness...even though they are supposedly aged for 3 months by the brewery and then prolly sat around for another few months at the distributer, bottle shop.

Tried the other last night. Some Brett quality, but almost no sourness. Only leather and some cherry/wood. Waay too many hops and the wrong kind. Won't buy again.

Way too many hops and the wrong kind has been the signature of American "craft" brews in general and those from CaliOreWash in particular for thirty years.

They should put it on the labels: "Way too many hops and the wrong kind"

I don't have a problem with a hop monster, but there are too many beers poisoned with vast amounts of high-alpha citrusy hops. If I'm looking for grapefruit, I'll go to the fruit market.

I have no problem with Hop Monsters™. I do have a problem with trying to recreate a style using ingredients that do not match the style and then calling it a "hybrid."

I've noticed that stores have started carrying more of these "Belgian hybrids" and less of the actual imported Belgians. And for some reason, the "hybrids" are the same cost or even cost more than the imports.

I remember a store in Portland (grocery store) that had the most extensive selection of beer I had seen at the time (1992). They had a lot of lambic, and not just Lindemans or Timmermans, but a lot of "farmhouse" stuff. I almost filled a duffel bag around Christmas there with almost exclusively Christmas beers, most of them from EuroFuckyLand. But I don't know if it's still there, much less the same - well I know the last part, there's no way in hell.

I think that the problem might not just be over-hopping, I think they used too much coriander. Not suprising as most of the "Clone" Recipes of Belgians with Coriander seem too high. I've never had a Belgian Coriander bomb, but a lot of American "Clone" Coriander bombs...

Last night, Russian River Consecration (Wild Ale with Currants): kind of reminds me of my own Black Currant Oud Bruin (not the Red Currant/Black Flanders Red batch), except you can't really taste any currants. Surpisingly, about as sour too. I think I'll crack open one of mine tonight and compare...

Killed my last bottle of Russian River.

Santification -- brewed only with Brett, apparentlly. This is the only one of their "American Wild Ales" that I've tried that I might buy again. I liked it because it was simple and a lot more balanced than any of their others.

Last night, drank a bottle of 1996 Vapeur Cochonne, which had been properly cellared (on its side) for just shy of 15 years. It was almost flat, with tiny bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass. Despite some precipitating yeast, it was clear and the color of homemade apple cider. Quite dry and lactic, but very balanced with almost no bitterness. It had an old, cidery character. I'd say this is definitely in the top 5 of the best beers I've had. Why didn't I purchase 2 or 3 bottles?

I've had much younger versions of Cochonne and the quality is spotty, similar to any of the Fantomes (which I am told we can no longer acquire in Washington State.) I've had decent bottles, skunked and corked bottles and bottles that were just plain unbalanced and weird.

My bar has roughly 100, but about
half are Coors, Miller, Bud products.

And I've tried all the rest.

It's possible my ennui is less about beer
and more about missing being somewhere I
can have an intelligent conversation
while consuming one.

I'd probably drink any beer from Munich with at least the expectation of rich malty goodness, but the savior has its name for a reason.

The only problem is its located in a town infested with Posted ImagePosted Image

Sounds like an accurate description of the Brick.

Hales Quadrupel Style Ale.

Unbelievably, 13% abv.

Surprisingly complex fruity profile (lotsa different berries), although way too sweet for a Quad, and not nearly as floral as most.

Very little heat for the weight, and the body isn't too heavy, but maybe they should have used one candy sugar, instead of three.

It's very pleasant in small sips, but tough to get through a bomber in one sitting.

Would've been better as fruit liqueur.
