I think it's funny how proud Europeans are of speaking several languages,
looking at a map, for a Frenchman to speak Spanish, French and English is like me speaking New York, Indiana and Appalachia.

Español esta muy bien para mí.
I don't believe that there has been a time in the last 500 years that Spanish wasn't spoken somewhere in North America. I don't have a problem with it. A classic education used to include Latin. Most of the folks on this side of the planet speak Spanish, it would do us good to learn it just as it would benefit those moving here to learn English.

Immigrants aren’t the problem, the PC idiots that have made it impossible to use an atm, or make a call without choosing a language are the problem. My parents are immigrants. The only reason I don’t sound like Colonel Klink is that we spoke English at home. The whole point of immigrating to America, is to become an American
In California, you can take the driving test in English, Chinese or Spanish, butt not In Japanese, German or Hindi. Sounds like we’ve got a ways to go before there is true equality.

The whole point of immigrating to America, is to become an American

So that means that everybody should learn to speak a native American language.

Which One?

Mohican?, Sioux?, Cherokee?, Apache?, Comanche? Miami? Pottawatomie? Ebonics?

English is certainly not a native American language. In a hundred years or so there will probably be more people speaking Spanish in the US than Engrish. Go figure.

People in Belgia speak 3 different languages with no major problems.

It is not really that big of a deal. I think we can all get over the minor inconvenience of having to choose a language at the ATM. Welcome to the future.

The whole point of immigrating to America is to live in America and be yourself, it is called freedom.
Cultural diversity is one of America's greatest strengths.
Let them speak any language that they feel comfortable with.

My family does not speak the local language at home.
My children three speak languages without an accent.
I did not come here to gain citzenship.
Which language I choose on the ATM is a matter of mood.

I do believe that freedom entails responsibility.

do try to convey some sense of it to my offspring.

There was a controversial story in the local news this past week that involves the concept of intolerance.

John Kelso wrote a funny column about it.

http://www.statesman...s...=7&cxcat=52

Hyde Park might not want to rent space to me, but why not the Muslims?
There's a big difference between selective and exclusionary.

Monday, November 19, 2007

If I were Hyde Park Baptist Church, ain't no way I'd rent out property to me.

First of all, I'm not your leading authority on religion. When I found out the Bible has a book called "Numbers," I was glad to hear it had a chapter devoted to casino gambling.

When I see a "What would Jesus do?" bumper sticker, I think, "Jesus wouldn't put a bumper sticker like that on his car."

Besides, if I rented a place from Hyde Park Baptist for a function, the first thing I would do is put in a keg. I would also have a smoker going and do sausage wraps. I might even bring in Miss Bud Light, and I would hire the Austin Lounge Lizards to provide music with disturbing lyrics. So I can understand why Hyde Park Baptist is a bit selective on who it rents to. But what I can't understand is why it wouldn't rent it out to a prayer group because it includes local Muslims. Muslims don't bring in no hoochie-coochie dancers. Muslims don't even drink. If you took a 12-pack of Milwaukee's Best and had a bet on who could hold out the longest from breaking into it, I'd take the Muslims over the Baptists and give you the points.

Why is Pastor Kelso delivering today's sermon? See, way back in July, Austin Area Interreligious Ministries, who believe different stuff but get together and pray anyway, booked Hyde Park Baptists' gymnasium at its Quarries property for a Thanksgiving interfaith prayer session. This event has been going on for 23 years and has yet to involve a single fistfight, which is more than you can say about most family reunions. But last week, Hyde Park Baptist told the group they couldn't use the Quarries, mostly because of the Muslims. So the prayer gathering took place Sunday at Temple Beth Israel instead. You had Jews and Muslims in the same place and no barbed wire. So in a sense, the Baptists performed a miracle.

Why did Hyde Park Baptist decide to give the mixed prayer group the old heave-ho? Simple. They don't want non-Christian stuff going on on their land. I didn't realize telling people to get lost was Christian, but you learn something every day.

"Although individuals from all faiths are welcome to worship with us at Hyde Park Baptist Church, the church cannot provide space for the practice of these non-Christian religions on church property," a statement from Hyde Park Baptist said. "Hyde Park Baptist church hopes that the AAIM and the community of faith will understand and be tolerant of our church's beliefs that have resulted in this decision." So they're pleading for tolerance while being intolerant. In these situations, people often ask the question I mentioned earlier, "What would Jesus do?" If Jesus ran the Quarries, I don't think he'd charge rent. I also don't think he'd turn anyone away. And, from what little I've read of the Bible, he'd probably provide free grub, although probably seafood.

Um, yeah.

I have three good friends that helped me with my remodel, two with papers, one with none. By good friends I mean, "come on over for dinner" friends. The one, who can't get papers, refuses to speak Spanish and gets the most work and the best pay. The other two speak Spanish every chance they get and make boneheaded mistakes because of it. I love these guys, but I don't like having to re-do work because they can't follow along.

I'm guessing there are not a whole lot of guys out there playing the bass Americans don't want to play, but it's a non issue. Music is a universal language. I can tell you, without a doubt, rigging isn't.

I'm tired of the "doing the work Americans don't want to do" bullshit

We don’t have full employment, and I really don’t give a fuck about what some welfare fuck “wants” to do. There are so many examples of why this kind of thinking is wrong. The folks who organized labor paid a heavy price to get you 8-hour days and benefits. Unless you are in the upper 2% of this countries wage earners, you better be thinking about it. Benefits are going away, overtime is going away and the unions are dying. Next time you talk to your credit card company rep in India, read the writing on the wall.

How was your Thanksgiving?

Pretty good, I went up to Georgetown TX w/ my friend Mark and his family to his brother in-law's house.
Steven the BIL, led the family in prayer and asked God to help the Texas A&M Aggies defeat the UT Longhorns.

After the meal, Steven pulled out an unopened, two year old bottle of Texas Nîmes that he had been saving till his new house was finished.

What Jesus said!

Two year old Texas Nîmes would make anything OK!

I think we can all benefit from learning some Spanish and as with other immigrant influxes, our culture and language will grow and be enriched.

On the other hand, I am reminded that the poet Charles Potts of Walla Walla wrote that "We will surrender to the Chinese in Spanish." This has more to do with the dynamics of how language actually defines thought and thus, behavior. He said that we couldn't even ask the right questions in English and pointed out the difference in conceptual approach between English, Chinese, Japanese and Spanish.

We English speakers are goal oriented -- it's the results that matter and we want them soon!

Chinese language is process focused and more long viewed. Japanese is process focused but much more mechanically so.

Language more than anything else is a way of expressing cultural concepts and we can enrich our experience by more, not less exposure. American English is already an immigrant oleo of languages enriched by German, Yiddish, West African, Native and other tongues. One of my favorite poets (and Seattle friend) wrote the following:

In Praise Of -- English?

Grand olde unsacred cow, horny and hybrid bovine
goddess of visions and our always forming thought --
to me (your swain waxing loco), you are Le Belle Dame
meat of poetry on the hoof, shitting dictionaries,
licking the moon to a thin, daylight salt.

In immigrant rhythms, your savvy appetite roams
all dem plenty fields under the copasetic welkin,
grazing for oily jargon and ripe lingo, jazzy slang
of the universal streets -- even dexter gizmospeak
and legalese glossoneered from the diatomic
and dusty luminescence of Greek and Latin.
Your chutzpah genius is to digest it all without ache,
thick native tongue lolling and slobbering
over the mishmash pemmican powwow of languages,
all chewed together in the jambalaya Dream Time
of your immense drooling cud.

All borders are open to you, Mama gaijin buffalo.
Today, y'all follow the high grass into the south.
There are vain vaqueros who would herd you away
from those Aztec bulls snorting turquoise steam,
take away your fat corn and your fait-do-do.
Him fella contra curator would fence you in
on a museum ghost ranch out of range -- picaynish
ersatz snafus that will never brand your hide.
As for me, this hombre would sooner talk
industrial amerikanski in owl vowels
and cat consonants, my high-five howdy given
to pipe dream pony soldiers of the Big Sky verb.

It behooves me to say that the rich can't own you,
your still wild stock begetting barrios calves
too revolutionary to trust, bigger than any barn,
belonging to all and no one, free for the breath.

From petal and thorn, weed and cactus, you make
patois billingsgate and homespun diablerie
the mechanic curses in, upriver
pidgin where the deal goes down, samizdat
dialects crooning a los niños beddybye,
southpaw accents of the hardscrabble earth,
sweet milk of song,
and the names we love and labor in,
by joke and revelation
for awhile.

Cros, you can't bellyache over fuck-ups when you ask friends to help with re-modelling. Or whatever. You know them, you should know the pluses and minuses you're inviting. Belly-up and take personal responsibility for your choice and the baggage that comes with it. Happens all the time when we ask friends to help us. As for your friend who opts to speak English instead of Spanish, that's his choice in the context given and he's being rewarded for it. The other two can see that and are personally responsible for their failure to make a choice that would almost certainly earn them greater financial reward. Funny how society often metes out appropriate encouragements or discouragements according to the situational appropriateness of our behavior. You just have to own your own role in bringing in whatever it is that you reap from what you sow. Laws too often do a pretty shitty job of it for any number of reasons.

Oh, and with ATM's, you have to remember it's not always nationals of the country you're in that have to use them. Making money available to tourists is good business. More than once I've been thankful of the option to get money out of a machine in a land where I was clueless in the native language but could press a key to make it all, in the given situation, comprehensible. Options are a good thing.

Things always change,
ask the British if the
sun ever sets on what
they have left.

Or the Spanish/Portugese/
Dutch.

The world's always gettin'
spongier, especially now
in the age of electronic
ether, everything seeps
everywhere. Your neighbor's
in Bejing and his is in
Montreal. English is spoken
in more of the world, not
less, but everyone, like
der Cros wants to hold
onto their "native" tongue.

Didn't the US kick Spain's ass? And Mehico too? I think one of the reasons for going to war is so they wouldn't have to speak Spanish in this Cuntry. Screw 'em.

And screw John Martnez too for speaking his Spanish...

Cros, you can't bellyache over fuck-ups when you ask friends to help with re-modelling.

I was paying them top wages, except under the table, which makes it much higher. We became friends as a result of them working for me. We got to know each other and have stayed in touch.

The thing is there are immigrants who are stupid and there are immigrants who are not stupid. I've seen just as many shit-brained things done by natives as I have by immigrants, and I've seen some immigrants do things brilliantly.

However, I do know for a fact that a large group of people willing to work under the table for next to nothing is not a good thing for either us or them in the long run.

That's why you pay them the same wages you'd pay anyone else. Then, one day, they'll say "chinga tu madre", when some scum contractor offers them $8 an hour.

I always pay scale. I only hire off the street, because I can find people to work NOW.

I go by what I read, until we meet. I assumed the friendship preceded the working relationship. And most of my friends are fuck-ups, so that's what I expect when I ask their help. If it was first an employment deal first you're in the right to expect what you pay for. My bad.

As an ex-pat I live the language thang from their side daily. Butt I definitely agree that an employer should expect fluid and fluent communication skills as part of the package. Or pay accordingly. And it's usually a pretty quick and easy matter to assess those skills. Intelligence, on the other hand, can be lacking by anybody. Unfortunately it can be more difficult to immediately assess, as well. Some people can present themselves very well and still lack necessary smarts for the job you want them to do. Others may have no social aptitude what-so-ever and come off as total idiots, yet be able to accomplish given jobs with great finesse. Besides, communication is not always a function of language skills.

The main thing that bothers me about the whole immigration issue is that when people (Lou Dobbs=people) say "immigrant", what they mean is "Mexican". Nobody is thinking of my Australian, Danish, Korean and Serbian co-workers. Nobody is thinking of Asian kids in our schools raising our math test scores. No one is thinking of the Nigerian, Pakistani, Turkish, Ukranian, Bulgarian, Indian and Nepali people I went to college with.

It used to be the Irish and the Italians that were the ones flooding the borders and working for next to nothing, and everyone complained about them. Those immigrants built New York and Boston.

Those immigrants also built strong labor unions though, which kept wages fair for hard working people, whereas the current situation is contributing to the undermining of those advances.

I don't think natives are losing jobs because of immigrants, that's just alarmist talk. 4.6 % unemployment is VERY low, much lower than any country that has strict immigration policy. But if an employer can pay pennies to an unskilled worker who doesn't ask for health care, they will, and then that will become the standard. It already is the standard for many jobs.

Nothing new about it. Business has been importing cheap labor since the country was founded, Irish, German, later Italian and Eastern European. Anything to pit workers against each other for lower wages. Racism and nationalism have always been vital tools in this dirty work. The answer is not for us to demonize the more desperate immigrants but to join with them in demanding decent wages and benefits. Now we have to do that internationally but with communication technology that is not as difficult as it once was.

It just pisses me off that it's popular to take it out on the people who left their home to come here and try to make a better one. Isn't the real problem the employers who are all too eager to take advantage of desperate immigrants?

To listen to people like Lou Dobbs, you'd think these dirty immigrants were sneaking in here like rats trying to steal a piece of hard earned cheese from the rightful "native" owners (whose grandparents were dirty immigrants), and are hoping to turn America into the same shit hole Mexico is.

Actually I do agree it's a problem with the school system. There needs to be a separate curriculum that can get non-native speaking kids up to speed in their own language first, before they can take English only classes at grade level. My wife co-teaches an ESL 11th grade English class and half those kids can't read at a 6th grade level in their own language.

No, just Spanish. That's the most common language being spoken by immigrants and also the easiest to find teachers to help with. Is it fair that taxpayers may have to shell out bucks to help these immigrant kids learn English? No, but as long as the country is allowing immigrants, then we should be prepared to do what we can to facilitate integration. It doesn't make much sense to bitch about how immigrants aren't integrating, and then not do anything differently to facilitate integration. It's the cost of being a melting pot.

Unless we're going to actually build a wall around the country (yeah, let's become East Germany) and deport everyone who wasn't born here (yeah, let's become East Germany), then we'll be far better off trying to get Spanish-speaking immigrant children up to speed than just throwing kids into classes in which they don't even know the language yet.

It is not really that big of a deal. I think we can all get over the minor inconvenience of having to choose a language at the ATM. Welcome to the future.

A very good point. I found it quite handy in France when I tried to use the ATM and saw the "English" button on it. I speak very rudimentary French, but it certainly made it a lot easier for me to spend MY money in THEIR economy. Maybe that pissed off some native Frenchman, but one person's inconvenience is another person's convenience.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
with silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Xenophobia resonates in this country, and politicians will fan the flames of anything that resonates among their base. My brother-in-law's girlfriend is from Dallas, and she thinks we should kick out all the immigrants and build a wall to keep them out, which would be funny, since if we did Texas's economy would collapse.

Besides, I'm sure that if our incompetent government actually did try to build a wall to block out immigrants, they'd probably read the blueprints wrong and build it 12 feet wide and 6,000 miles high.

Penn and Teller hired a tuck load of illegal aliens to build an exact replica of the fence the Bush Admin is building (the one with a number of gaps). It took the crew all day to put it up. They then broke the workers into three teams, one to go over the fence, one to go under the fence and one to go through the fence. It only took minutes for the team breaking through the fence to get in, a bit longer for the team digging under and just a couple more minutes for the uncoordinated guys climbing it.

Once again, a stellar use for our tax dollars.

I just got back home from the first preview performance of "La Pastorela" http://www.lapastorela.com/. It is a Christmas play that has been performed in North America since the fifteen hundreds. I am playing String Bass in the "pit" orchestra for this years production in Austin. It has been a mind blowing and eye opening experience for me. Now I feel that I have an understanding of why my departed friend Keith Ferguson loved Mexican culture so much.

Part of the BS is borders themselves. They don't really exist and the rich can come and go as they please and live where they choose. The primary thing about them is that on one side of the border, Texas Instruments, Ford, General Foods and others can pay you much, much less than on the other side. Our economic policies like NAFTA, CAFTA and the Maquiladoras along with centuries of interference in the internal affairs of Mexico and other countries have created a crisis that forces folks to come north in order to support themselves and feed their families. That need trumps bullxit rules.

As Eric points out, Mexicans have been here the whole time. An irony that hits me is that most of them are native Americans (Athapascans).

I've got an idea; Eric's house, Prol's house and Bill's are open to any outsider,

I understand what you're saying Prol, and I feel for everyone trying to feed their family, the way I see it, they have 3 options;
follow the rules,
break the rules,
or go home.
If they break the ( I.C.E.) rules, it's not my problem, I don't care.
I do care whether or not our corporations, businesses and govern mental agencies are following the rules though, and as a general rule, they don't.

Kirk isn't a xenophobe. Asking people to respect the laws of the society within reason isn't xenophobic. I guess I just don't view the immigration law in this country as being all that important. Since we yanked Texas and New Mexico from the hands of the Mexicans, I guess I don't see the problem with letting them come back in to benefit from some of that, illegally or not.

What's xenophobic is blaming everything on a group of people just because they're not from here. When it becomes fear of "them", and people start blaming everything from crime rates to health care costs to traffic accidents to the weather on "them", that's xenophobia. Immigrants sometimes risk their lives to come here, and when they do come here, they almost always work their asses off. I always thought that's what America was about, you know, that whole independent spirit personal responsibility strong work ethic thing... There's a lot of Americans who could be taught a lesson or two about those things from recent immigrants.

This will piss off a lot of democrats, but that and the telecommunications act of 1996 were the worst things Clinton did, and pretty much put him permanently on my shit list. At the end of the day he took the side of corporatism over the side of the middle class, and I fully expect his wife to do the same. What better way to polish the knob of insurance companies than to pass a law requiring everyone to have health insurance, even if they can't afford it?

I hope the left leaning people here are smart enough to vote for somebody other than her in the primary...

I have been impressed with their idea of 'family' when I see Mexican or Asian immigrants working in the U.S. Any money collected by the individual goes to the good of the family. The American family has disintegrated, and it is a "Me, Me, Me" mentality.

No, I am not joining the political chorus of 'family values'. I can't stand that shit! I think the government should steer clear from most of the personal morality issues. Stay out of our bedrooms!

I'm simply impressed that the sense of family is still strong within the Mexican and Asian communities. The elderly patriarchs and matriarchs are kept in the family and revered instead of being seen as a burden or stashed in a nursing home. The children work for the good of the family instead of being spoiled little brats who demand play stations and Ipods and think the world owes them something.

*Or my comments may be misconstrued and I have just advocated child labor and keeping grandma handy as a footstool.

A Pan Am 727 flight, waiting for start clearance in Munich , overheard the following:
Lufthansa (in German):
' Ground, what is our start clearance time?'
Ground (in English):
'If you want an answer you must speak in English.'

Lufthansa (in English):
'I am a German, flying a German airplane, in Germany .
Why must I speak English?'
Unknown voice from another plane (in a beautiful British accent):
'Because you lost the bloody war!'
