Wife and I saw Sin City last night...pretty good, all in all.

Let me state for the record that I didn't care for the comics/graphic novels. The art was too blocky, too monochromatic, too STATIC somehow and too repetative.

Robert Rodriguez supposedly followed the comics as storyboards for his movie, but I don't see how...the comics seemed stagnant and the movie was just too over the top and lively to have been copped completely from the comics.

Loved the ultra-styliized ultra-violence, the fact that they made Mickey Rourke even uglier than he is naturally (no small feat) and the general cinematographical feel of the flick.

Anyone else???

I saw it opening week end and was blown away. I'm no fan of comics, or graphic novels or whatever they call em but the movie was definitely groundbreaking.

Also, I’ve seen a website where they take single frames from the movie and compare to the original work. In many cases the similarities are nearly complete. The amount of screen time that captures the original intent is amazing. I'll have to look up the link, but it is impressive.

First story, with Micky Rourke was the best IMO, but the entire movie was a kick ass ride.

You mean the way her fat, hairy lesbian coven told her that it portrays women.

A real modern woman she is! She should go and make her own decisions rather than follow someone else's biased advice.

Oooh, stuff like that just burns my sugarcubes, if you know what I mean!

SIGH! Fine...

You mean the way her fat, hairy lesbian KID BROTHER told her that it portrays women.

Regardless of who told her, she should still go and make her own decisions. I found the women sexy and empowered and they knew that they were often the cause of the men's downfalls....just like in good film noir.

My fiancée would definitely fall into the "feminist" category. As a matter of fact, so do I. We're both still big Frank Miller fans though, and both really want to see the movie soon.

IMO, women should be proud of their beauty. There is a difference between objectification and idolatry. Miller tends to idolize his women as portraits of powerful fantastical beautiful beings, not just merely tits and ass to drool over. If his women were dumb and served no other purpose than to giggle, suck dick and fret over their weight, then I would say his portrayal of women was negative. But that's not how he portrays women. He portrays them as having a mystical power over men, and as capable of extracting emotion from even the hardest of thugs.

Fantastic movie. Saw it opening weekend.

I don't do the whole comic book thing, but I have read a couple of grapic ovels that have impressed me ('Maus' is an excellent one. Won the pulitzer).

The movie? Awesome. Stunningly, violently beautiful.

And I can't believe I am going to say this, but I gotta say this...

Mickey Rourke did an EXCELLENT job.

Interesting thoughts (obviously a reference to Hammy and Porkio, not the above). My personal opinion is that humans are not going to stop objectifying one another. I'm too influenced by Sartre to think otherwise. Consequently, I applaud equal objectification of males. It's when the balance is off that I tend to get annoyed.

Girlfriend disagrees with me on this. Vehemently. I will now have the Porkio Heuristic by which to judge the flick when I report to her. She'd probably agree more closely with Porkio.

She has beautiful breasts, CG, but she is both alive and married.

Actually my girl probably disagrees with me too, but it's not like Miller shows guys blowing their load on girls faces. On the contrary, he shows stealthy prostitutes ripping off male genitals.
As long as sexy women are portrayed as powerful, I have no problem with it. It's only degrading when they're portrayed as subservient mantle pieces.

It's kind of a cruel cultural joke that so many men would be attracted to uncomplicated, perpetually available, overt female sexuality that exists for others' benefit. That's the image the simpering obectified present. Meanwhile, actual females are socialized to be complicated, covert and repressed. The ubiquitous, objectified female media image is maligned for its negative portrayal of women, but it seems to me that the joke is on the men.

I'm going to see the film this afternoon with a buddy who has officially adopted me as his "hag."

Cee Gee, you are awesome.
Kirk, you are the daddy of 'em.

I liked the show. Here's my review:

Assets
Art direction.
Seedy underbelliness.
The women kicked ass and ruled their own lives.
Some cute one-liners.
Avoidance of certain stock characters.
Mild ambiguity.

Drawbacks
Some benevolent sexism (but less than you would see in that pap
that passes for entertainment on the Lifetime Channel).
No male nudity.
Excessive crotch harm.
