Ten Fidy.

One of the few beers that actually has more flavor chilled than it does at room temperature.

Or mebbe it's the firmer texture that makes the flavor more mouth-coating.

Either way, it's definitely liquid smoked ham in a can.
To the bar, for flaming Hills enemas!

Out here,
"room temperature" is synonymous with
"lukewarm" or "body temperature,"
more accurately.
There's just too much time to kill between all my mistakes.

A nun and a Bishop were riding on a camel in Ethiopia, looking for the priory that held the holy grail.

The camel died in the desert.

The bishop decided to go for it.

He showed the nun his holy staff, and told her it was the source of life.

She told him, "then stick it up that camel's ass and let's get the hell out of here".

I attended a beerfest in Madison Wisconsin and made a side trip to New Glarus - the brewery wasn't open to visitors because it was Sunday, but there was an outlet store nearby, and I stocked up.

Very good beer, not all of it Belgian style - Spotted Cow is a very good ale.

None of it is real lambic, though. The microflora living in the air particular to that area in Belgium is what it is, and it's not the same as Wisconsin, or some other place.

Three Floyds - Alpha King. Good beer! I wouldn't mind a keg of this. I don't think it's distributed here though.

Our distribution continues to get worse.

River City has a better alternative. If a distributor doesn't have a given beer and if a liquor store or bar can find it somewhere, they can bring it back and sell it. As long as they pay the local alcohol taxes and a small permit fee, they don't have to buy from a local authorized distributor. Some bar owners will drive to Pennsylvania or wherever and bring back a few kegs or cases of something they like. It usually ends of being kind of pricey but I can find some stuff that's not otherwise available.

Three Floyds - Hammond Indiana, right across the border from Chicago.

I talked to one of the Floyds at a beer fiesta in Chicago, and threatened to visit the brewery. He was very nice, very receptive. I didn't remember it later - my wife told me about it, though. All those thujones in that Alpha King strangle up the brain.

Boulevard Saison Brett.

Much more character than their standard Saison. Lots of lacto/barnyard funk, coriander, orange peel, watercress, and enough black pepper to rival any of the Fantomes. Really lengthy and excellent finish. I'd prolly choose this over most of the Fantomes, in fact, onacuz there's a better balance, with just as much flavor. Plus, it doesn't require months of yeast settling before it's drinkable.

Betterer than I remembered it, great blend of sweet, sour and fruity. Really elegant xit.

It's tough to justify two and a half times the price for RR's sours, after drinking this.

North Coast Grand Cru (bourbon barrel aged)

Definitely one of the more legitimate American brewery takes on the Belgian style.

It reminds me of a much stronger version of Pierre Celis's Grand Cru that he brewed here, except this is primed with agave nectar instead of candy xugar.

There's the same excellent balance of coriander and orange peel, but there's a welcome slight sourness, and a subtly integrated bourbon that doesn't distract from the tradition profile.

It starts out a bit too sweet, but dries out considerably as you drink it, and the alcohol is very restrained for the 12.9% abv.

Rodenbach is the sour beer benchmark.

After tasting Russian River Supplication, I'd have to disagree, but the Grand Cru is definitely way up there.

Um, no.

You'd just rather spend the buxxx (with a triple xxx) on clown xoes, and not on beer.

Grand Cru is definitely cheaperer, but not no way is it betterer.

Personally, if I have a choice between contributing to the coffers of Californicatia or Belgica, it's pretty much a no-win, butt I'll choose the former as the lesser of two evils.

Speaking of sours, I sampled an ancient bottle of your Peche last Saturday, and I must say, it had become much more sourer.

It's also the benchmark you rate the other sour beers against. One day I'll try one of the vintage Rodenbachs and see how it compares to my aged Grand Cru.

Ruxian River has a betterer and cheaperer selection of potables that doesn't include black lickerish-tasting crap, so it's good to see LDF has upwardly mobile aspirations, at least.

That Beer Assholicate website is a hoot. There's not a beer so good that some smug anal-lyst won't pick it apart and give it a D+ after several paragraphs of ignorant bullshit about what he imagines is in the flavor and/or went into the process of the beer. That's the kind of shit that helped drive me to writing about absinthe, but sadly, it's a big dayjum voo.
You might be surprised how well old goat sausages are able to stand up to the heat.

Much more inneresting than any same old same old Czerland bottom fermented swill I've ever tasted.

There will be a second part to the extramural sales of Westverelen 12: a 70,000-case batch is being brewed for international distribution next year. The US and France will receive cases, as could Japan and China if distribution deals are secured.

Once that is finished, sales of Westvleteren will once more be confined to the walls of Saint Sixtus, its brief foray into mainstream commerce over once and for all.

Saint Sixtus, which started producing beer to sustain itself a few years after it was founded in 1831, is the smallest of six monastic breweries in Belgium, and the only one to stick to antiquated sales methods.

It produces 475,000 litres of beer annually, a fraction compared with almost 40bn litres from Anheuser-Busch InBev, the brewing behemoth behind Budweiser, whose global headquarters are down the road in Leuven. Absomph drinks approximately 471,000 litres of beer annually.

There will be a second part to the extramural sales of Westverelen 12: a 70,000-case batch is being brewed for international distribution next year. The US and France will receive cases, as could Japan and China if distribution deals are secured. Absomph has pre-ordered 65,000 of those cases headed to the US.

Once that is finished, sales of Westvleteren will once more be confined to the walls of Saint Sixtus, its brief foray into mainstream commerce over once and for all.

Hinterland Winter Land. A dark ale with juniper berries.
Brewed by Green Bay Brewing Co.
Quite tasty; malty and a dryish, intriguing flavor from the juniper.
