Full Version: Fucking Paypal

Dear Customer

We are sending this email because you have previously ordered from us using PayPal.

I am sorry to inform you that you will no longer be able to use PayPal for your purchases from our website. This is because PayPal have decided that they will not allow their service to be used for the purchase of absinthe.

We were notified of this decision by email last week and we were given six days to remove the PayPal option or face the closure of our account. We feel that PayPal are wrong to limit our freedom to supply a product which is legal in the EU where PayPal has recently transferred our account to. We also feel that it is wrong of them to limit your freedom to purchase a product and I hope that you will contact them to express your feelings.

We will continue to offer credit and debit card payment facilities via WorldPay and trust that the withdrawal of the PayPal option will not inconvenience you too much.

The PayPal email is reproduced below, as you can see they offer no reason for their summary decision.

Best wishes

Ian Hutton
Managing Director
Liqueurs de France Ltd

Dear Ian Hutton,

We appreciate the fact that you chose PayPal to accept payments for your business.

However, we have found that your websites offers absinthe essence. We have taken the position that absinthe essence cannot be sold using PayPal as a payment option.

Please remove PayPal from your website at http://www.absintheonline.com/.
This will need to be completed by March 10, 2004.

Please be aware future incidents of this nature can lead to the limitation or permanent closure of your account. We value you as a member of our community and wish to continue this relationship, so we must ask you to refrain from any violations of the Acceptable Use Policy.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Sincerely,
PayPal Compliance Department

I've always hated paypal anyway.

Paypal has its uses, unfortunately they are not customer service oriented. I wish LdF took American Express, that’s the only reason I used Paypal with them.

My paypal account is frozen because someone made a fraudulent transaction using my account.

I fought it...Won...AND MY ACCOUNT IS STILL FROZEN.

That's right, maltreat the victim. That's always smart.
Absinthe_1900
This has been increasing lately, eBay has been using Paypal to harrass collectors on a rival auction auction site. (not absinthe related)

Cros is right Paypal has it's uses, but it's customer service is terrible.
I'm getting to the point of using it less as time goes by.

Ditto.

I agree. Unfortunately, paypal still seems to be the most popular payment method for online payments. All that crap about "Don't use other companies because they might be fraudulent" sure helped them too, I think.

Those bastards froze my account simply because I didn't add a bank account. I opened it with my credit card, and just used that. It was sufficient for my needs. Then, about 3-4 months later, I log in to find it frozen. WTF? I get a mysterious email saying that I haven't complied with regulations or some crap (apparently you have to do everything they "suggest" or eventually you violate the TOS). At the time I had about $145 sitting in my account. So I bent to the extortion and added my bank account so that I wouldn't lose the $145. It took them about a month to un-freeze my account. After which I promptly cancelled it. Fuckers.

Wow ... I've NEVER had a bad experience with Paypal .... I've had them refund money on stuff that was never shipped to me, answer questions about transaction that I wasn't sure of and they've been very nice to me about everything.

That does suck that they are canceling him, though ....

Speaking of Paypal.......

I just received an email from "Paypal"saying that my account was being restricted due to a third party possibly using my account.

There was a link on the email to access Paypal. I started to access my account with my password. It immediately took me to a page saying that I need to update my information( creditcard #'s, bank accnts, etc).

A flag went up! I immediately backed out and went to the paypal website, changed my password and contacted them.

they replied that they would never provide a direct link in an email and would also address me by my name and not my email address.

They further requested me to forward the fraudulent email to them.

More on topic to this thread... I got the LDF email too..Hope worldpay doesn't start that too. toilet2_lg_wht.gif

There is a group of fraudsters using Korean websites, to fish for Paypal passwords, as well as the usual Nigerian & Eastern European fraud rings.
It's getting pretty common in antique collecting circles, though they are generally incompetent at putting together a good pitch.

I'd close my account stat if it weren't the only efficient way to get funds to a particular — especially talented — gentleman.

I've used Paypal exclusively for accepting payments on my website and never had a problem with them. They make things much easier & cheaper for those of us with small, home-based businesses.

I don't know much about their practice of warning people off other online payment services but I do know that working with financial matters and people's bank accounts, credit cards & personal info is a complicated business & full of regulations. I imagine it would be top priority for them to be proactive in regards to any possible fraud or illegal activity or they wouldn't stay in business long. When I worked for an online travel company it was pretty amazing to see the amount of fraud that goes on that most people are unaware of. Some online travel agencies will simply refuse to sell tickets to certain destinations that are high fraud risk. They also make every effort to be cooperative with goverment agencies & credit card companies trying to track down fraudsters and their illegal activities.

I'm not saying absinthe is a high fraud market, just that Paypal is a business that has a lot at stake and they are probably just watching their back.

Late to the party as usual...oh well, I'll still add my 2 cents worth.

I am with Xu-Xu on this one; although I am aware of PayPal's tendency to freeze accounts & sometimes even seize the funds in them without due process, I simply cannot sell on eBay without PayPal. If I allowed buyers to send checks/ money orders, I would have a constant nightmare of trying to keep track of who had sent a check, which checks had REALLY cleared (instead of just my bank clearing them & then 10 days later finding out it was a bad check), having to pay currency exchange rates (the best thing about PayPal to my mind is the fact that they exchange currency with no surcharge) & having boxes of items sitting around my office waiting to be sent when payment is *really truly* received.

It totally sucks about PayPal's new "no absinthe essence" policy (is real distilled absinthe "essence"? I thought essence was what those jokers at Absinthe America sell) Makes me wonder if anything labeled "absinthe" including spoons & glasses will now come under the microscope. If so, guess I'd better re-think some things.

Same here.

On the other hand, isn't that same person a wee tad worried about the unfolding events?

Perhaps a distinguished member with a louched avatar may want to comment?

Methinks that we are not all talking about the same talented gentleman, though all of the talented gentlefolk out there are relevant.

Paypal is a necessary pain and will remain so as long as people insist on using it.

I much prefer the gold backed currency systems (e-gold and such) but nobody use it compared to Paypal.

PayPal has agreed to pay a $150k fine to New York States "to settle charges that it misled customers who expected refunds when purchases went awry" However, PayPal is facing other investigations including one from the Federal Trade Commission.

Has anyone commented to Paypal reguarding the LDF situation?
They sent me a survey Re: my above situation. I included a section voicing my displeasure over over the LDF decision and letting them know that such action would necessitate my taking the majority of my business elsewhere. ( Especially if they broaden their ban) angrysoapbox.sml vtffani.gif

I just got an e-mail from our work computer guy saying
there's another pay-pal scam to get credit card numbers
directly from you to re-open your acount, as opposed to
the password scam mentioned previously.

I've stopped offering PayPal today.

Instead there's a direct Creditcard payment system, which should make things even easier for everybody.

Glad to hear it, Markus.
