How did you guys like the latest batch?
I'll get to the moon soon enough!
I tasted many different ones at LF'03 and it was all very, very good!

My biggest problem with the moon is that it's a long journey, and the ticket is expensive.
But the view is nice.
I've got a reservation with #27. I'll let you know as soon as the ship docks.

Yeah, the pre-sale thing is kind of like coitus interruptus. I know waiting to sell the stuff until it's aged (like every other manufacturer on the face of the earth does) would stop the flow of revenues for Moonman for 3 months and could interfere with funding further experimentation, but the pre-sale thing just doesn't make much sense to me, though I suppose what's cool about it is you do know for sure that your absinthe is properly aged.
Absinthe from the moon is certainly worth the wait, and better than anything commercially available, so I'm not knocking it. I just wish I could get it one week after I order instead of 3 months.

Same here. It was to be my first taste of an HG, but now I have a sample of #26 on the way (thanks Wolfie/Moon!).
I can't wait to get that full bottle of #28 in Jan though.

"would stop the flow of revenues for Moonman for 3 months "
No, that would just be financially impossible for Moonman to pay for the alcohol, Herbs + his regular bills for 3 months of production (6 batches ... 60 bottles...think about it).
The Moon-guy said good by to an high tech job (about 35K us$/year + incredible full proof insurances + pension plan + ...) to concentrate his efforts on absinthe making and business development. He even recently got a begging call from his previous employer and said no thanks. Believe me, something serious HAVE to come out of this one day. Until then, it's financially difficult.
One day, instant gratification will be possible, until then at least he is taking risk to throw us a bone and when you get one of his scarce R&D bottle, you'r allowed to feel as being part of absinthe history.
Once again, Moonman send you his most sincere thanks.

Disappointing.
More alcohol heat than any Moonie Juice I can remember.
Peppery aftertaste. #24 blows it away. Lacks the usual masterly balance.

unique moonman metalic tang.
I had this wild harvested stuff from Oregon w/ lots of flowers, and the taste struck me as similar to Moonman's, slightly metallic and tangy. Maybe it's the flowers? Maybe not. Hard to tell.
I lurved the Moonman #24 at LF. #23 is kind of soapy, but it's grown on me. It's nice after a meal, but not and absinthe to sit down an have 4 glasses of.

" #24 was the hit of Louche Fest #1.This #25 is pretty bad."
Taste buds can play very funny tricks...
You know what ? #24 & 25 are the same recipe and have been aged IN THE SAME BOTTLE and are exactly the same.
The #22 blanche was not a final product in itself and was just a small sample of uncolored distillate provided for comparaison purpose only (to show what the coloration can change). That will teach me ...

Some people got a bottle of both, if they didn't drink everything yet, could they please do a side by side test and report ?
Slowly pour both at the same time in two identical glass, with the same spring/filtered ice cold water ratio and with identical sugar cubes. The water ratio should be the same in both glass but how much water to add depends on your preference (I recommend 4:1).

I've got a bottle of #28 and #29 ordered, and they're both Pontarliers - Wolfgang, do you know if there's anything about the new batch (#31?) that would make it especially worth ordering? Is it terribly different and/or expected to be an improvement?
Wolfgang
Nov 8 2003, 07:38 PM
#28 is a Montpellier (with coriander and angelica seeds...)
#29 is a Pontarlier with a lot of extra hyssop in first maceration (very aromatic)
#30 is a Pontarlier with extra melissa and also a bit of extra hyssop. It is more on the citrusy side.
#31 is a Pontarlier with a tiny twist of mint, based on the experience Moonman had with the previous two. There's mostly extra hyssop but also some melissa and a bit of mint added prior to the distillation. Some technical improvement have also been done on the shape of the still head.
All 3 Pontarliers have the same coloration (in decreasing order of importance : Pontica, hyssop, melissa).
If we want to be very picky, we could say that #31 is not a true Pontarlier because there's a bit of extra mint added to the recipe, wich is not part of Bedel's list of ingredients...but really, it is just a little touch to add some freshness.
IT is now up to you to make your choice.

What was 18? It has a similar taste that I don't find totally pleasing in the other HG I've tasted. Heavy on Hyssops maybe? Or Juniper maybe?
Other than that, it has a nice light color that louches nicely in ice water. Very nice flavor without sugar at 4:1.
Wolfgang
Nov 8 2003, 08:47 PM
18 ? there's a lot of things in #18 but I would be surprised if it was the hyssop you don't like. Probably the cardamone-melissa mix (soapy).
Le Gimp
Nov 8 2003, 08:48 PM

It's easy to get too heavy with the cardamom. That stuff can easily kill a good balance.

Nov 9 2003, 05:53 AM
Well, it's a question of taste.
The Mayor enjoyed the #19 very much but I think it's the worst ever sold.
I think that #22 was too strong on the wrong kind of fennel but otherwise had a nice intence flavor and texture. #23 was not the best ever, it is a bit light but it is very refreshing and delicately herbal.
I'm 90% sure most people who will get the 26 will think it's the best green Moonman ever made... and #28 may blow it away ...and after that it's too early to be sure, aging will tell.
But then again, it's according to my palate and personal preferences.
