I don't think you could do this at home, any more successfully than steeped absinthe.

I've tried mixing absinthe, with ales that I thought might be suitable, and the result always sucked ass.

Sounds like a waste of both absinthe and ale.

Everyone I know that tried using wormswood in Gruit Ale stated that it basically sucked.

I'll stick to drinking Absinthe.

I read an interesting article on Arak today. It had a nice description of the process of using grapes to make the wine to distill for the base alcohol. Lots of work.

I tried some homemade tsipouro. Quite good but only with a passing resemblance to arak.
