It's expensive, difficult to get, preparation is time consuming... So why do we drink it.

For me - It's very refreshing. The taste of a good absinthe is so complex. There are so many different herbal flavors balanced in the mix I can spend minutes on each sip, just to pick out the flavors.

It gives a different buzz. I like the energy buzz I get.

It's "illegal" and "dangerous". Yeah I like the novelty factor too.

Absinthe has a history. I feel 100 years old every time I drink it.

I think that's it. What are your reasons?
1888
The allure of its history tied together with the many inspirational types that retreated to its use during times of artistic genius.

The taste is fantastic and the 'clear headed' drunk comes second to none.

The complexity of the different herbs and such that create such a symphonic balance, cries to be drunk and savored.

When I first tried absinthe (La Fee; 2+ years ago), I was drawn to it because of the history, the reputed effects, the fact that you can't get it here, and I was curious about the taste, knowing virtually nothing about that until I started my on-line research before ordering.

Fast forward two years.. taste is now by far my number one consideration; new, quality absinthe is like discovering a fine, complex wine. I still get a charge out of the history involved, the "taboo" nature of it; it's local unavailability, and especially the ritual and accessories that accompany absinthe preparation. (It makes a good show for guests, too). Secondaries? Love 'em. I get 'em regularly, but let's put it this way; I'd never buy a poor-tasting absinthe just for the buzz. Conversely, there are a couple of brands that I regularly restock(Segarra, and now Kubler 57) that provide me with virtually no secondaries.

In short, it's all about the flavor.. everything else is a lagniappe.
MrGreenGenes
I also like the awake-drunk effect, the ritual with the spoon, sugar & drip, and the semi-illicit nature of it.

But I'll add one - that burb you get about 10 minutes efter you last drink that one last time fills your mouth with the flavor the cues your brain that the absinthe affect is on its way. -- Yum!

Absinthe is the culmination of my need to drink more and my complete lack of drink mixing skills. I want a refreshing alcohol drink, and dislike all wines and 99% of the beers I have tried. Absinthe is refreshing, both after a hard night at work or a lazy summer day. I love the ritual.

Oh, yeah, it tastes good too.
Louched Liver
It trips Ballz in my REDRUM.

A couple reasons for me ... I love the ritual aspect ... much like the preperation of a cigar. The other is the taste is unlike anything I've ever had, smooth and powerful, like a Ferrari, and lastly, I enjoy the fact that I'm not supposed to have it. Like eating the cookies from the top shelf cookie jar that your parents put up there out of your reach.

You know... I jujst re-read this and it sounds kinda gay, but it's all true, I swear. Leatherman.gif

DS pretty much hit the nail on the head for me. The history in particular. I'm a major history buff in general, plus I love art, literature, and music. Absinthe (for me) enhances all of those, and played such a large part of the late 19th century's 'scene'.

Anything 'verbotten' is always alluring and attractive.

The buzz is sooo much better then anything else alcohol-like.

I was drawn to the history and "mystery" of it more than 10 years ago. When I got my first taste of it , 3 years ago, I was hooked. The taste is the priority. The ritual of preparing a glass and the glass, spoon, fountain, etc. add to the fun. Drinking a glass of absinthe puts me in a much more relaxed state of mind than a glass of wine or Scotch, and I am not talking about the effects. Wine is a "mmmmmm", while absinthe is the "ahhhhhhh".
JLB
I was definetely lured in by mystique, but absinthe has elevated itself from novelty by
virtue of its refreshing taste.
I'm not the drunk I used to be, but absinthe really fits in my relaxation equation
well. The buzz I get when I drink absinthe lends itself to intense focus, excellent to take along with a book out on the porch, in the tub our out on the hammock watching the leaves fall and clouds roll by.

1. Because I'm not supposed to. The cookie-jar-on-the-top-shelf metaphor is apt.
2. Because I like lots of different kinds of booze and like to feel that my liquor cabinet is well-stocked.
3. It' tasty.
4. It has introduced me to many new and interesting people.

The history. The taste. The ritual. The forbidden. Just like everyone else.
Rimbaud
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: taste, buzz & history. I also enjoy the ritual and "the allure of the forbidden"...

Absinthe, - Why do I drink it?

Because you guys are hogging all the HG.

I was contemplating cutting my ear off and I decided I needed a little encouragement. So, I turned to the Verte.

I wish it was the aphrodisiac that it is claimed to be. It doesn't nothing to my libido, pro or con.
Wolfgang
It makes me drunk but awake at the same time. Of course this is an illusion, it's like being "awake" in a dream. It is a calm "eyes wide open" kind of drunkness.

Recent drinking experiments with the Moonman's #29 "extra hyssop" Pontarlier really make me feel like I'm walkind on clouds and contemplating....the wallpaper after only 2 glass.

Hey we should find an icon for "walking on clouds" !

SOme more info about Hyssop...

QUOTE
Currently an undervalued medicinal herb, hyssop is potentially useful since it is both calming and tonic. Hyssop has a positive effect when used to treat bronchitis and respiratory infections, especially where there is excessive mucus production. Hyssop appears to encourage the production of a more liquid mucus, and at the same time gently stimulates expectoration. This combined action clears thick and congested phlegm... As a sedative, hyssop is a useful remedy against asthma in both children and adults, especially where the condition is exacerbated by mucus congestion. Like many herbs with a strong volatile oil, it soothes the digestive tract and can be an effective remedy against indigestion, gas, bloating, and colic.

There's more to absinthe than just wormwood...
sancho
i thought it would get me chics
Gertz
History, mystery etc. got me turned on. I've always wanted to be a mad artist.

The taste made me continue. I happen to know a few wine buffs, so I have had my chances to taste some good wine, damn good wine, fuckin' good wine and ridiculously overpriced "cult" wine, and I do like such stuff indeed, but even a simple oil mix like Lasala taste just as good as the vast majority of all that, IMHO.

Oh, and then the buzz. Of course.
Raindog
Not breaking any new ground here but I first tried absinthe out of curiosity, I keep drinking it because there is no other alcoholic beverage that tastes better in my opinion.

REDRUM, REDRUM!

It's the eyes wide open that I like, the increased aesthetic awareness. Clear headed and relaxed without the nastiness I usually associate with an alcohol buzz. Plus I love the taste.

Yes ... it's that look of, "I really didn't have sex with you, did I?"

I first tried Absinthe because I was told not to by the CO at the base I was stationed at in ROTA Spain. I found I liked the effects and the anise flavor.

I've been seeking it ever since then.

Now that I know a bit more about the history and traditions (other than the Czeckerland ones) I enjoy it even more.

Interesting indeed.

I always remind people that soap operas are all about people who have interesting lives. Hence, my favorite curse, Johnny Carson notwithstanding...
