I just finished reading "Between Silk & Cyanide" by Leo Marks. WOW this was a great book.
Leo Marks is primarily known to most people as the screen writer of the infamous cult flick "Peeping Tom". During WWII, he ran the cryptography department of Britain's military, the SOE. "Between Silk & Cyanide" is his autobiography of those war years.
The bravery of the agents who were being dropped into the occupied countries of EuroFuckyLand was unbelievable. I had never really thought about what it took for them to operate in France & Holland & Belgium & Denmark etc until reading this. The efforts of those back in the UK & some of the things that had to be done for the greater good is incredibly well described by Marks. I really recommend this book to all you Lounge Lizards.
I'm just sorry Marks died before he could write the rest of his story; I would have loved to learn more about what was involved with "Peeping Tom".

I dont knwo you Felis... but you made my day by mentioning Caleb Carr!
The man is amazing. I think I mentioned his books on the old site. 'The Alienist'...
I fucking LOVED
The Alienist....
"The Alienist"
is great, but I didn't think the sequel "The Angel of Darkness" worked as well (despite having some wonderful descriptions of Greenwich Village at the turn of the century). And I HATED Carr's attempt at science fiction, "Killing Time". It read like a teenagers re-write of "The Illuminati Trilogy".

In the middle of two:
Sexus--Henry Miller, and
Kafka on the Shore--Haruki Murakami
I've read Sexus. That whole Rosy Crucifixion trilogy is probably the sloppiest stuff Miller ever wrote. But if you can handle his ego, they're fun to read.
His best book, IMO, is The Colossus of Maroussi. In Sexus, where he goes on for pages and pages before he completes a paragraph, he'll get the same thing across in Colossus in one sentence. It's honestly one of the best books I've ever read.
I'm about 100 pages into Geek Love. Man, that book is absolutely incredible. It will probably end up in my top 20 for sure.

For the first 20 or 30 pages of 'Sexus,' I thought is was all pretty juvenile and self-glorifying. I was just about to put it down and read something else. But ya know what? I couldn't. The writing is just too damn good. The same kind of guilty-pleasure type of feeling you get from watching a really excellent action movie: half of you knows that it isn't that good, but the other half of you is having a really great time and tells the first half to shut its smarty-pants little mouth before I come over there and sock you one.

hahaha, i have felt that way before reading Miller.
another ego trip: have you read Shit Magnet? i think i got 15-20 pages into it before i just couldn't take it any more and put it away for good. "my mommy and daddy didn't love meeee"
- ok, great. i got the point.
