Does anyone know the cheapest way to get Segarra? I know I could research this but honestly... I'm too lazy. Sorry.

I haven't had it in a while... is it still as 'oaky' as I remember?
Le Gimp
No,

No,

I got no Oakyness from it.
David
Have you tried it at 2:1 ?

I remember a lot of 'earthy oak' at that ratio and this is the one commercial Absinthe that I actually have a slight craving for.
Le Gimp
No, I went 3:1 and finally 4:1

I'll try 2:1 the next time, before diluting further.
Sponge Bob
I'm a big fan of the Segarra 68.

It's very bitter, my feeling is that there was a little AA used in the coloring step. Still he's managed to make it work.

The 68 is not oaky at all. Its just wormwood, wine spirit and anise. Its simple, balanced, bitter and very good.
conju
If you buy segarra, buy the 68, otherwise you're wasting your money and are no better than a damned hethan. There I said it.
Off. Jack Batemaster
I disagree...the 68 is crap. A total rip off.

David, the 45 is "buttery." I think it's the Wine spirits he's using. I detect it in the 68, but it's covered up with that really bitter funk.
Masque
I like both.

Yes, I am a Segarra whore. Probably my favorite commercial though...
A.B. Normal
I've only had the 68 so I can't compare it to the original.
But I liked the 68.
I don't know if I'd spend the money for it, but I wouldn't turn it down if it were offered to me again.
Justin
Between the two, I like the 45 much better. As discussed in the Commercial section, it was the original and the distiller's preferred recipe. I think the 68 is actually not as interesting. Not to mention the difference in price.

Just my $.02. And I have two bottles of the 45 on the way. I think it is one of the more unique commercial products that isn't nasty and freakish. Though I haven't tried that many...
Off. Jack Batemaster
If I get the chance, I'll try the 68 again. I only took a sip from Skeeters glass and immediately spit it in the sink. (Right now, I am referring to the Segarra 68.)

Someone else who drank it that night, also had the theory that he is using Absinthium in the coloration. Maybe Mr. Segarra has been reading Dr.O's threads?

I was also suprised to find that the Wormwood he's using isn't that Grate.

I'm absolutely positive that's what he's doing.

I think it's a miniscule amount, just enough to kick up the bitterness. I like it, but I like beer with lots of hops so go figure.
Off. Jack Batemaster
I'll send you some of Dr.O's homebrew....
Sponge Bob
That's kind of you, but really I'm fine on berk.gif

...I do not know where he said he got his absinthe from, but will state the following. Andy bought absinthe in Barcelona, and was very disappointed with the final product. I found plants in the Spanish pyrennes and believe there is a major difference between Spanish absinthe and French. Just the “terrior”, the growing climate, heat, soil and altitude should and, most likely, do make a difference in the taste of the plant...

I re-read this the other day and picked out some interesting information.
Off. Jack Batemaster
...interesting.

I'm also thinking that he might be picking it too early.
David
Back to the cheapest source for a second... anyone know right off hand?

I wish those 'sponser' tabs where still at the top of the board.
perruche_verte
My god, David, you really are lazy. Good thing I'm compassionate (if snide).

BTW, welcome.

Probably the cheapest way (outside of getting a friend who's vacationing in Spain to buy a couple of bottles and hand-carry them over for you) would be to order from FSC using economy mail, provided you're willing to wait up to 9 weeks (according to them). But there are reports of packages arriving much sooner, so maybe you'll get lucky.

I like Segarra, both the 45 and the 68. I couldn't call it the "best absinthe" being made today (pretty much a useless designation anyway), but it shows more care and skill than many of them and you get a lot of bang for the buck. Jack's preferred classification of it as "absenta" rather than "absinthe" makes a lot of sense to me, and on those terms, it is definitely the best absenta.
DGLeadbetter
Not really a "cheapest" source, but I prefer Spirits Corner. Pick up a couple bottles and make the shipping worthwhile.

I always thought Segarra (not 68) has a "cherrywood" taste to it ... and I like it.

The 68 isn't bad, but I'm finding I'm not drinking as much absinthe as I did before LCLF. Hmmm .... I blame the HellBoy.

I go through ups and downs. After LCLF'04
I wasn't in the mood for drinking much (lasted 7 days). Then I didn't drink much absinthe... but recently I've been a having a few three four at night. Drunk.sml

Since I've been sick, I've lost my taste for Absinthe. Saturday night, I wasn't even feelin' it although you'd never know it considering how much Absinthe I drank. Too bad really, I have a bottle of some really nice smelling White Swiss Absinthe, made with Genepi and Veronica - which I haven't even sampled.
lambchop
I'm back on an absinthe kick.
Tryin' to get those bottles empty so I have less stuff to move Saturday.
I'm doing a bang-up job.

Last night I had some Félix, some Pignon, two editions of ET, some fucking fantastic Swiss Absinthe Ninja product that I know only as M12, some 10ysinthe, and something that had lost it's label that I think may have been Nemesinthe #7.

Many of them were quite small, so it’s not as Bacchanalian as it sounds….
CelticGent
did you pour some down the drain for your (brain)dead homie Lars?

I ordered 4 bottles (one Segarra 45) from Spirits Corner 2 1/2 weeks ago using their economy mail delivery. All 4 bottles arrived this week in 2 separate packages. I've waited 6-7 weeks for orders from SC in the past so I'd say that right now is the time to order.

If you decide to go with the expensive Segarra 68, you might want to consider the expensive courier shipping as well. It's guaranteed and you don't want to take any chances of losing a 125 dollar bottle.

I personally think that both the Segarras are excellent commercials. The 68 has more bite and stronger "effects" but may not be worth 3 times the price of the 45.

Segarra is well known for his excellent Absenta since years. Now there comes the ultimate 68% Version which is highly recommended by international Absinthe connaisseurs.

Such little as 21 litres results from one distilling process of a 1000 litre alambic.

Julian Segarra collects all the wild herbs in the mountains around Chert himself. He needs approximately 3 times as much of them for the 68 as he would need for the 45!!

Absenta Segarra 68 comes in the classical Segarra bottle, which was exclusively designed for Segarra in the 30ies of the last century.

An Absenta of very very special quality, which you should not miss!

3 times as many herbs as the 45? I wonder if he is rectifying a first distillation?

Um, no.
Dr.Ordinaire
Don Segarra has built a reputation by making an excellent (if unconventionally made) absinthe.

Maybe now he wants to make something more like traditional absinthe, by increasing both the alcoholic content and the bitterness.
Off. Jack Batemaster
Um, yeah...I've read alot of texts that mention using AA to color.

You're the expert on bitter nasty swill, I'd have thought you'd know better. Distilled AA tastes different than AA used in the coloration.

Off. Jack Batemaster
His mother too.
Dr.Ordinaire
I did not say that Segarra uses (or has to use) AA in the coloration. All I said is that his absinthe is closer to traditional one by the fact that is the same alcohol content as Pernod (68%) and the fact that is bitter.
Grey Boy
Most good absinthes are in that alcohol range,
and the bitterness is a subtle part of the overall balanced flavor.
Grey Boy
Addendum to above post:

That applies to commercial and other goods.

Dr.O must not have tried Segarra 68, otherwise he'd be yammering and nattering about it....

I'm sure lots of vintage recipes left out the Fennel too.

Jack, you are a newbie, but you are not THAT MUCH of a newbie. You were here (or maybe there, at LFV) when I sent Louchy a sample of my amended brew and he posted a, if not complimentary, at least OK review.

Why are choosing to ignore that?

What is your problem, Jack?
