Full Version: What Author Makes Your Skin Crawl?

For me, JD Salinger.

He makes me cringe. I've had to read a couple, and each page I read just makes me want to haul him out of his seclusion for a public flogging.

In Catcher in the Rye, I wanted to beat the hell out of Holden, for having such a worthless and mushy outlook on everything. That guy needed to find a clue. It was a book about nothing. Worse, my English teacher at the time was in love with the character. Jesus, did she need to get a life, too.

Anyway, years after reading it, it still gets on my nerves.

Who else has a pet peeve author?

Dr. Suess.
His plots are childish.

Oh, quite contrary, Mr. Mayor!
Why be a boo-hoo nay-say'er?
Things so bad you'd cry me a river,
or piss it out from your rotten liver?

Dr. Seuss' books really are da bomb,
even if the old goat had tagged yer mom.
Try "Hop On Pop", unless that reminds you of the 'Bator,
or having your nads in the mouth of a hungry 'gator.

Nothing to do but throw down some crappy rhyme,
cuz I'm bored at work and I've got plenty of time.
Don't get angry and think you've been dissed,
unless you're so dense the humor done missed.

That almost tops Celti's Haiku-limmerick.

LOL, good one!

I hated, hated, hated "On the Road" by Jack Karouac. rlwhore.gif

If I wanted to read a 300 page book about getting high, listening to music, and fucking underaged girls, I'd just read the diary of any popular-wannabe irresponsible modern day high-schooler.

How the hell did that book ever become an "American Classic?"

As for authors who make my skin crawl... Kafka... one odd guy. Good writer, though. Of course, you know you've made the big time when you have an adjetive (sp?) made out of your name.

Brett Easton Ellis. American Psycho is a brilliant and very disturbing piece of trash.

yep.

that's why it's my favorite book.

i still haven't found a clue.
Porkio
Yeah, that's what I love about Catcher in the Rye too.
If you like Catcher in the Rye, read "When I was 5 I killed myself". It's an equally brilliant tale about wayward youth, except the kid is like 8 years old.

My least favourite author is Nathaniel Hawthorne. He's a condescending fuckass who is also a lousy writer.

Perhaps this is a girl thing, but I agree entirely. How that juvenile, self-absorbed, irresponsible, immoral drivel ever ended up being the voice of a generation makes me very very happy that I missed that generation entirely.
How's that for some vitriol? angrysoapbox.sml

All around? Clive Barker.

Single story? "Apt Pupil" by King .... that story really got to me ... I was disturbed for 2 months after reading that one.

I adored Apt Pupil. Disturbing is good.

John Grisham. No question.

He's a lawyer, who, get this, writes books about lawyers. BUT WAIT, it gets better. He writes the SAME book 10 times, and because his buddy is a producer, they become movies that upper-middle class white people watch to feel good about themselves, or to relate (as all of his shitty books are about 'young, idealistic, white lawyer, trying to make life better for/get off some poor, disadvantaged and wrongly accused minority/poor-person/cripple).

That fucker has NO skill.

Yeah, that and beatnik writers get tired and old quick for me too. I did a writers workshop a couple years ago, and in it there were three Karouac-worshipers in it. Man, I got sick of their 'road-tales' that they never took.
DGLeadbetter
Wait .... duh. I thought you meant "skin crawl" in the scary sense ....

Hold on, let me do it to myself:

Nah, that's not a girl thing. Jack Kerouac is a wanker who suffered from diarrhea of the pen.
Even Bukowski had more talent and imagination than Kerouac.

If you want good autobiographical fiction, read Henry Miller & Anais Nin. They were far more risqué than Kerouac, and did it 30 years earlier. Kerouac was a bum, Miller & Nin were artists.
lambchop

well, i LOVE hank, and i thought on the road was good, so i guess i'm a wanker. but you knew that. :D

i also like miller and nin though. so maybe i do have SOME taste.
Porkio
I guess part of it is I just have an aversion to Kerouacs writing style. It just sounds like he's some average joe telling you a story. He doesn't have much style or personality, so that's why I think it's bland, but he certainly had an impact so I'll give credit where credit is due.
lambchop
Ditto. I'm not always such a raving angrysoapbox.sml (though I'm generally a raving something-or-other. Take your pick: lunatic? alcoholic? general menace to society? and I DO hate Kerouac)
CelticGent
oh, i can completely understand where you're both coming from.

if we didn't have opinions, life would be very uninteresting.

btw - i HATE the beatles.

I saw part of the movee, but they left out that detail.

I read his books? There have been times I have wanted to waste
precious hours of life, and I like b-monster stories.

Nathanial Hawthorne. There is something hinted at but never

still regular people despite their "sins."

O.K, I who will be first to deliver punishment?

OK.I think it's Dean Koontz,not Stephen.I have'nt read any of his books

I apologize to the victims of my insomnia.

Easy mistake. Dean Koontz, Stephen King — same guy, different genre.
