According to FDR - A Presidency Revealed, on the History Channel:
"During the war, FDR loved to relax at Hyde Park with friends while mixing martinis with a dash of absinthe, producing what many said were the worst martinis they'd ever tasted."

It was Herbsaint. (A lot of sources say annisette, and Herbsaint was often confused with absinthe druring the 30's & 40's)
A dash of absinthe in a Gin Martini if done right is pretty good.
Churchill was a really impressive martini drinker, who enjoyed quite a few martinis everyday was well.
Vodka martinis suck, a real martini is made with Gin.
