This is a DAMN good show on the History Channel. Look for it again:
RUMRUNNERS, MOONSHINERS AND BOOTLEGGERS revisits the rough-and-tumble days of Prohibition for a candid, inside look at the legacy of this tumultuous time. Former Rumrunners talk of their run-ins with the Coast Guard, and we'll see how NASCAR owes its existence to the failed attempt to dry out the nation. Authors like Philip P. Mason (Rumrunning and the Roaring Twenties) and Gary Regan (The Book of Bourbon) provide a historical perspective, while retired agents and prosecutors reflect on their difficult, dangerous and ultimately futile efforts to enforce a law that America clearly did not support.

I'm not quite that old. I did run the old two lane roads from above spartanberg SC to Knoxville quite a few times in the early 70s driving a 55Cheve Belaire. No shine in the tank though.
I was going from Memphis TN to Columbia SC on weekends, and back while I was going to NAVY training at Milligan Field.

Just saw it. GREAT show. I cursed and swore every time I saw an ATF bastard.
I cheered at every moonshiner, and shed a tear every time one got busted.
I was hella-amazed at the size of some of their distilleries. 36 giant black-pots on one of them. I was like 'DAMN! All that booze'. Then, the Feds blew it up. I cried a lot during those trying moments.

How about those distilleries below ground...Under the False graveyard? And the one in the abandoned School bus? These shiners sure had some inventive ideas.
I knew the Mob was always involved during prohibition, but I didn't know to what extent. Amazing to see the details leading up to the Valentine's Day Massacre.

Eastern Tennessee and WNC is still a place to get wonderful white liquer if you know the right people. TVA shine is like grey goose with a very pleasant apple taste, the best I have tasted. At least that's what I have heard.

Hehehe, Eastern Tennesee? Try most of the damn state...
I know the mountains of Western TN (South of Memphis) are full of stills.
I always try to talk my Grandmother into bringing me back a big ol' Mason Jar of White Lightening. She just tells me that I shouldnt drink because it runs in the family (then opens a beer and says its hot out)

My uncle, up in the woods of Louisiana, used to make "White Lightnin" and give it to my dad. He just couldn't understand why the 5 gallon jug was always empty.
The stuff tasted like birch wood.
