Full Version: Pinch off the top?

I planted a few new AA plants a few weeks ago. Some of them are bushing out, but a couple of them are growing straight and narrow.

Should I remove the tops of the tall ones to encourage them to grow out some more, or should I let them all grow naturally?

This isn't quite what I thought this thread was going to be about.

Pinching the tip is where it's at.
TrainerAZ
Pinching the tips back will encourage bushier growth.

I assume that flowers are on the current year's growth, which means pinching back now would mean more flowers later in the season. Therefore, pinch away!

(Unless I'm wrong. Which I don't think I am.)
DrinkSlinger
Yep.

Just make sure they little fellers are thriving before you start cutting them back.

You could also bend the longer stalks downward, and hold them there (with a stake, not your hand dufus). Within a week you'll see leaflets popping up all over trying to grow straight up...

Can Artemisia be propagated from stem cuttings?
It acts like it wants to be.

I've heard it can be done.
TrainerAZ
You could probably also ground-layer it.

Bend a stem down so it touches the ground, so you can weigh it down with a rock. 4-6" should extend beyond the rock.

Cut a slit where the stem will contact the soil, dust it with rooting hormone, and bury/weight that part of the stem (still attached to the plant), and be sure the growing tip is still exposed.

Let it grow a few weeks and it should be rooted. Then just cut it off the main plant and transplant.

It can also be air rooted (with some appropriate substrate). If using rockwool, be sure to keep it moist with a dilute nutrient solution (I prefer Olivia's). One thing I have learned is not to remove the dead/dying leaves near the stems. If you leave these be newer growth will start from each junction with the stem, creating a bushy plant.

That being said, the plants I have are also stretching a little now, with softer tissue growth than I have normally seen. It could just be the time of year, though I imagine stretching would occur most in the winter.

I was wondering what that xit was.

Air layering don't seem to work too good here in Hot Desert World.

Plants don't grow so well in a convection oven.

I tried that, but it didn't work well.

At $5.99 a plant, you're better off just buying them, unless you want to sacrifice a good plant to attempt 100 cutting propigations.
