I'm poking around for a present to add to my Amazon.com wish list. Anyone have any opinions on any of these?

Absinthe: History in a Bottle
by Barnaby Conrad

The Book of Absinthe: A Cultural History
by Phil Baker

Absinthe the Cocaine of the Nineteenth Century: A History of the Hallucinogenic Drug and Its Effect on Artitsts and Writers in EuroFuckyLand and the United
by Doris Lanier

and of course, they have Butty's book, but from what I've heard, I can take a pass on that one.

Suggestions? The holidays are coming, so I might as well ask for what I want, so they get it right.

Thanks!

Wow .... sounds like you've got it covered. The only other ones I can think of are Marie-Claude Delahaye's books .... although not translated, but would make a nice addition to the library.

DG,

I don't own any of those. I'm looking for recommendations on which one(s) to ask for as presents. Not having seen them, I'd like to prioritize.

Thanks!

Got it .... basher.gif

IMHO, you got them in the right order, depending on how many presents you can scam ... I mean ask for you hit the nail on the head.

As far as MDLH's books ... some are out of print, but you can find them if you root around www.eabsinthe.com .....

Get the one's on your list and you're good to go.

Conrads book is the best. It doesn't cater excessively to the mythology, is structured really well, and has lots of good pictures.

The Book of Absinthe is also known as the Dedalus Book of Absinthe I believe, and is needlessly wordy and meandering. I still haven't finished it.

Benoit's book (Absinthe: A Myth Always Green) is a fun and quick read, and will give you a unique no-nonsense perspective.

The one by Doris Lanier sounds like a hokey pile of shit, but might be good for a laugh.

And really, in this day and age, couldn't we all use a good laugh now and then?

Another good Absinthe book, if you can find a copy, is "The Green Goddess" by Aleister Crowley. It's pretty short but a pretty interesting read...
There's a free online copy, if you just want to read it, at:

Green Goddess

I looked through Conrad's book at one of the local book stores about a month back. I went back to buy it and it was gone.

Nice book. Lots of nice pictures. From skimming it, I got the impression it was well researched with respect to the artist who were covered. It seemed to take a slant towards the artist community, which does not surprise me.

I'd buy it if I found it in a store again, but I won't order it.

Lystie just brought Conrad's book home from the library. Wow! I have only skimmed it but the old pics are amazing. I look forward to reading it.

Dedalus Book Of Absinthe

Dedalus book of absinthe
Rimbaud
I have that one. It's a bit wordy, but halfway decent...

A new book "Hideous Absinthe: A History of the Devil in a Bottle" by Jad Adams

Hope ya don't pay by the pound.

Yeah, have to see how weighty it is. ;) Hopefully a bit better than Bakerīs effort. I think Adamsī book of Dowson was ok.
