Wyoming has the largest state budget surplus in the country, at somewhere over a billion dollars. This is due to mineral rights money.

Connecticut has one of the largest state budget deficits in the country, along with California and Vermont.

Your mean income data is misleading as well.

Connecticut may have the largest gross mean income. However, two factors come into play: state income tax and cost of living

Wyoming does not and never will have a state income tax; Connecticut does have a state income tax of 7 1/2%, so shave off a couple thou from that figure.

Cost of living is probably at least 25% cheaper in Wyoming than in Connecticut, so essentially a Wyoming Dollar is about 4/3 of a Connecticut Dollar.

Statistical data is notoriously misleading, we don't know if everyone in Conn. makes 40,000 a year or if a few people make millions and many people make shit. We would want to know the median and mode of the data as well.

As far as gross state product goes, probably California generates the most money.

However, Wyoming unquestionably has the most cold, hard cash of any state.
