I don't know a lot about wine.
I never buy expensive wine.

I usually spend $10-20 on "drinking" wine. A few of my favorites are in the sub $15 range.
I have been known to plunk down over $100 on the occasional bottle of champagne or "special" wine. Shit, why not. Scotch and absinthe aren't cheap either.

Sep 26 2005, 07:58 AM

For under $7, I like these cherry wines from
Chateau Grand Traverse Winery.
Sadly, I have to have folks bring it to me from Michigan. I can't buy it here.

funny how you can buy absinthe, yet cherry wine is off limits.

I'd usually plunk down $30-$80 for a bottle of good wine which probably explains why I haven't gone near the stuff in years, except for an occasional glass of house blecch in restaurants.

yeah, but then with tip, ...
I was under the assumption that this was a question of how much we spend on retail wine... not at a restaurant.
I rarely drink wine at bars. The selection is either too shitty, or when adequate, usually too expensive.
I'm also a glassware snob. If I see shitty wine glasses I'm not ordering wine (no matter how nice or moderately priced it is). Conversely, if I see great glassware I'm more likely to indulge in sub par wine... or a higher priced bottle.

Last night I picked up a bottle of Chappellet Napa Cab. Sauv, ($45),Sebastiani Cab. Sauv ($18), and a bottle of Mossy Oak Wild Game blend ($4.99- the one with the deer on it).
The Sebastiani fell victim to my thirst as soon as I walked in the door. By the end of that I was too intoxicated for the Chappellet, and not nearly intoxicated enough for the Mossy Oak. I'll save that one for the bimbos.

A bottle of wine, on an empty stomach, is enough to put me far enough into a buzz that I wouldn't want to waste a really "good" bottle of wine on getting more drunkerer.
Instead, I had a few beers and then Kubler 53%.

From 30$ to 500$. The favorite this far is Leoville du Marquis de las Cases 1998.

$500?
That had better be some good xit.
I plunked down nearly $900 once, but it was a really fine 1900 Port, which I would have bought again, if I could have found another bottle of it.

I rarely buy wine any more since the wife quit drinking (meds) and I don't particularly enjoy more than one glass. About the only wine I drink is Oleroso and I get it from the cask in the back room. I refill it with cheap Taylor dry Sherry for $8.95 a 1.75L bottle. What comes out is unrecognizable as Taylor sherry.
The one on the left is Taylor before going in the cask. The one on the right came out of the cask.

I used to buy $10-$20 range wines at the local shop wehre they would let me know if a better Austrailan or California wine was on sale. Mostly any more I drink beer.

I like Charteuse. It's a peculiar vice. One that may not reflect well on me for a number of reasons.
What I'll spend for a bottle of wine depends on a number of factors...one of which is the wine.

SNAKE VODKA 25CL
Edible’s snake vodka contains a farm raised wolf snake, which has been specially bred for us in China. We infuse the vodka with the snake for three months, which then imparts a unusual flavour into the vodka, which is quite an acquired taste.
Alcohol infused with a snake is said to be an aphrodisiac, particularly for men and it is also supposed to contain many health properties.
Our snake vodka is best served straight from the freezer, neat, but it is also pleasant with a simple mixer.
* whilst the snake is perfectly fine to eat, we do not recommend it, due to the fact it contains many tiny bones *

This is one of my more special crates. 6 bottle crate and I would estimate the value to be around $1500-2k. It contains 1 1991 Heitz Martha's Vineyard, 2 1994 Far Niente Cabs, and 1 each of 1993, 1994, and 1995 Far Niente Merlots. Many wine geeks are unaware that Far Niente merlot even exist as it was so limited and so allocated. It was supposed to be on-premise only.
