Let's be clear.
Alcoholism is defined as alcohol dependency.
Which is not to be confused with alcohol abuse.
And that's really a misnomer because it's not the alcohol that's being abused so much as my liver.

Djirk is partially correct...the recent definition of alcoholism is when alcohol affects your life in a negative way and you allow it - there doesn't have to be any chemical dependancy. B'lieve me, I argued with my ex-shrink on that one....

Your shrink is livin' in psychobabble land. The above is 1 good indicator but not difinitive by any means. Say your wife is against drinking at all and gives you hell for having a couple of beers a week, does that make you an alcoholic?
Say you were followed coming out of a bar (set up as it were) by a cop who was watching the joint and gave you a ticket for driving with a .08 BAC -- you wound up having to go to ASAP classes. Does that make you an alcoholic?
Say your basement is loaded with aging booze, you make your own beer and are obsessesed with booze spending most of your time hanging around in bars or online alcohol posting boards AND continue drinking even though it's had negative effects on your life (loss of jobs, marriage . . .). OK, in that case, you are probably an alcoholic.
There are also many examples of successful peope who are/were alcoholics and have not suffered negative consequences.
Now if the above is true and you have also had "blackouts" and the shakes, you qualify as an alcoholic as opposed to a social drinker or even an abuser sans dependence.
