My grand-pappy worked in a livery stable in San Francisco in 1906. He was sleeping on the 13th floor when the earthquake happened. In the following days he said he saw men cutting fingers off corpses to get the diamond rings. He walked out down the peninsula and joined a railway work crew. I guess he might not have gone to Colorado and met my grandmother if not for the quake.
