Cat Ass,

I've seen that site before. Very informative. Here's my analog synth:

What is it?Two we had in class had no keyboards. They
had to be hooked up seperately.

Thanks for the pic.

Let me guess: LA Harbor College. Moog Model 12's. Also a humongous & very expensive (if I recall around 30K) Emu in it's own room. Am I right? Dr Rodney Oakes still running that program? That's where I got my start in the biz, back in the late 70's.
Porkio
The composer I used to work for has a Memory Moog, Moog Poly, 2 MiniMoogs, a Moog Source, a Roland Jupiter 8, and an ARP 2600. He also used to have a modular Moog (very rare, everything was patchable but it was HUGE) that he bought used for $100.

The Memory Moog is amazingly cool, with a super fat sound, though it has 8 voice cards which need to be periodically reset as they go out of tune.

The original Emulator? Whoopaa, that's a big MF'er! I used to have their first rack mount digital sampler (also called the Emulator if I remember correctly). It was like 8 bit, had 64k of memory, and had a really noisy fan.

Actually, it was the last analog Emu before the Emulator. Dave from Emu Systems built it specifically for LA Harbor College & he used to drop in & visit it quite often. It had a 12 event sequencer as a separate unit (you turned knobs to control the tempo speed), & was truly polyphonic in that it had 4 discrete oscillators: whoa, 4 voice polyphony, VERY impressive in 1977! Although it had a traditional kb attached, my friends & I used to do such things as taking metal pipes, inserting a mic in one end, hanging them from the ceiling as a mobile & then triggering the synth thru banging on the pipes or wrapping tape around them & pulling it off. Lotsa fun, especially if one had been indulging in typical teen intoxicants prior to entering the studio. Ah, analog synthesis...these young pups have no idea....
Felis Catus
No,Birmingham High School-'77 &'78.Steiner-Parker,Moog,and VCS3-
the same type used on "Dark Side of the Moon".Only three in existance
and our class had one.We also had keyboards(brands?)that I never used.
Strictly F/X.We had a ring modulater that was alot of fun to watch.

Buchla came to our class once with his built-from-scratch synth's.

Our class mainly focused on sound theory.Once we learned that
we got to play with the toys.

Lots of fun!
Aion
Just imagine a live concert played on a modular patch
wired synth. Impossible?

Klaus Schulze, live concert in Linz/Austria 1980!
lysistrata
Aion, thanks for attaching the photo. The 2 banks in the background are Moog Model 12's. Those are what we learned on at Harbor College.

Even MORE fun than live performance was attempting to notate your settings so that they could be reproduced at a future date. As far as I'm aware, no one ever came up with a standard notation system, so the synthesist would end up making strange diagrams of arrows & circles with numbers above them to indicate the setting of that particular knob. Except it never worked anyway, because those analog synths were notoriously unstable, so setting something up the same way was no guarantee of achieving the same sound! What a nightmare!
Felis Catus
I saw a live analog synth concert at my H.S,and they had
same kind of diagrams you mentioned. Not nearly as much equipment
as in that pic,though.
Felis Catus
That pic reminds me of Winslow/The Phantom in his studio
in Phantom of the Paradise. They used a real synth in the movie-
I ca'nt remember the name of it.Maybe I can find it in the
museum.
King of the Echo People
I have a nice Casio sampling keyboard. I can play the Blue Danube waltz with fart sounds.

How nice.

I'm looking at that poster as I type. It's one of my prized possessions, having somehow survived 20 years of touring, living out of cars & motels, as well as a few settled periods of domesticity.

Anyway, I believe that's the original SYNCLAVIER in the poster altho there are some Moog modules as well.

Absolutely awesome movie, LOVE the music! Probably the best thing Paul Williams ever did.

Here is another interesting site:

Felis Catus
It is always nice to meet another PotP fan.I agree about the music.

I have bid on several Potp posters with no sucess.I am glad your
poster has made it through all the years and all your trials.

I did win a press kit with six b/w glossies.

Unfortunately the website, which was very well done, was taken
down.A mailing list exists but very few people post.

I keep hoping to see PotP put on stage, but it looks like that
may never happen.

Thanks for the info on the synths used in the movie.

The last time I moved my tape disappeared, but I am
planning on buying the DVD.

If you ever feel like talking in detail about this great movie
or the music, just e mail me.I am afraid we might eventually bore
those on this forum with our other obsession.

Cheers! jarswim.gif kimouss.gif

Thanks for the link to the vintage synth site.

I read some of the information on Buchla. The synth he brought to my
H.S class was amazing to behold, but we were not allowed to touch!
He used a series of connected pins to make patchcords;it was a
very unique setup.I was glad to be able to at least look and listen.

Depends on the pattern of the mic and what kind of mic it is.

Incidentally, this months issue of Mix magazine has an article on the sound design for Master & Commander. They were recording cannons in Michigan, and had a stereo pair of Schoeps set up about 300 feet down range to capture the cannon shot overhead passbys. They were listening through the headphones and were astonished at the low frequency oomph the sound had. So they went to go look at the mics to double check the configuration, and the mic stand had actually fallen over, and the incredible low frequency sound came from the vibrations travelling through the ground and into the mics.

Yes, I'm a huuuuge nerrrrd.

I'd be surprised if that's the original Synclav, as the original one was purchased by experimental electronic musician Joel Chadabe for something like $25,000 when New England Digital was in it's infancy. The first Synclav was only an 8 voice FM synth, and lacked the sampling option that ended up making it the uber keyboard.

Many composers and sound designers still frequently use their Synclavier, even though NED went out of business 13 years ago and is unfortunately considered obsolete. That machine was about 20 years ahead of it's time...

2001 was my favorite movie.I also read the book,

brought in a Tee Vee and we watched the Twilight Zone. bookish.gif

However,I was not in the Dungeons and Dragons club. scared.gif

I did not go to the prom(even though I was a geek, I did not look like

My gay friend who had already taken three girls to their proms,
my 23 year old boyfriend who lived in N.Y,and a family friend who thought

Sure,if you leave the Doc Marten's and spiked gloves at home.
I really have a thing for men's 19th century clothing.Will you wear
a frock coat, waistcoat in your favorite color(S),white kid gloves
and a top hat?

I will wear a green velvet dress to match my eyes,lace-up
black boots, put my hair up in black silk ribbons, and wear
black velvet gloves.

Not a goth-I just like 19th century fashion.

My musical tastes?Progressive rock,"Hard" new wave, plain ol rock n roll,
old blues,reggae,80's Ska,punk. The closest I have come to goth
is The Loony Runes, and they do'nt even fit the category-they're
just plain scary-for-real.

I went through a dress-all-in-black phase in my early 20's,but I just
liked black.

I think you should trade in "bedwetter" for "The Spider King."
After all,is'nt your avatar a spider monkey soakin and smokin?

Even if it is'nt,Spider Monkey is so much more regal and
menacing.I say petition The Mayor. nopity.gif

yeah, sorry i bunched the D&D, Renne Faire and computer geeks together. that wasn't very nice of me.

i actually played D&D once or twice in jr. high.

those same kids i played with ended up being drama kids, band kids, and all around geeks. usually those are the people i would see at Renne Faires dressed up & trying to talk funny. i especially love the dipshit trekkies that dress up as klingons and go to renne faires. for fuck's sake - comedy clubs have NOTHING on renne faires for laughing your ass off.

as for the prom - i originally thought - "hey, going to the prom doesn't make any sense....these kind of people never had a date to the prom"

but then i remembered even I went to my senior prom, and if a non-popular dickhead like myself had a dfate, maybe the OTHER unpopular people did as well.
Porkio
I played D&D once. I couldn't take it seriously. My character was named Deathifer, I was a Ranger, and I brought a wild boar with me whose only purpose was to sniff out Truffles.

Ever watch the TV show Freaks & Geeks? It was only on one season but was amazing. Just a few nerdy kids who were Rush fans and played D&D in 1980...
