So, I did a google search for an old article about the bar where I used to work.
I kept getting all these Elliott Smith pages.

Turns out, despite the fact that I was working that night (I worked every night), I don't remember it at all. But Elliott Smith played in my bar. I'm guessing to about 15 people.

At first I thought it must be a mistake. Maybe there was another bar called Congo in Scottsdale in 1994/5. Surely I would remember Elliott Smith playing.

Then I read this, and knew it was my bar.

The show itself is incredible. Elliott is in top form despite noting that he
was still getting over a cold. That having been said, the crowd didn't treat him
all that well this show, and he sounded slightly perturbed at them a few times.
"There's a lot of talkers out there tonight. Do you guys always pay $7.50 to go
and talk?"

Yep, sounds about right.

Even stranger, the person who posted that was someone calling himself "Raindog."

Sadly, I wasn't there. The last show I caught was in WNC, shortly before his demise.

Elliot's music defined a certain period of my life, he was drunk, pissed, strung out and often suffered severe bouts of mental illness. "From a Basement on the Hill" is still one of the most important works that I know of and describes the spiral in his own words. It was essentially his suicide note.

October 22 of 2003 is a day that I will always remember, I suppose it was my 9/11.
