Anybody read Stephen Kings Dark Tower books? I just finished "Wolves of the Calla" It is great! But if you haven't read it yet make sure you read "Black House" and "Little sisters of Eluria" first. "Black House" mostly as it has a lot of bearing on what is about to happen. Also, here is a cool website to check out

Is Rose Madder part of that series?
I read one he wrote under a psuedonym about a town
that becomes a child's drawing.Very bizarre and violent.
I ca'nt remember the name he used,or the title. Do
you know ,Maturin?
The most disturbing Stephen King books I have read
are Insomnia, Thinner, and Misery.
I loved the movie he wrote for TV-Rose Red?

I'm not sure about Rose Madder. I think it has some ties to it but Insomnia links to Black House which links to the DT series. Most of Kings books tie in one way or another. But the series itself is
The Gunslinger
The Drawing of the three
The Wastelands
Wizard and Glass
Wolves of the Calla
And then there are two more that have not been released yet.

Yeah, it had a bit of back story but the tie in to DT is huge for the rest of the series. There is also an important tie in to Hearts in Atlantis.

Hile Gunslingers. To me!!!
I am a DT junkie. I have read (and re-read) all of them now, and I am currently half-way through Wolves. The DT series is, without a doubt, my favorite reading by a modern popular writer. I really don't care what people make of that. I love epic-style writing.
Every 20 pages or so, I have one of this spine-chilling moments reading it that make me stop and think/worry/feel/hurt for the characters. Roland is a superb tragic figure, and Jake is about the only kid I like in a book.
I am trying (albeit poorly) to pace myself so that I don't read Wolves too quickly, and suffer more withdrawal while waiting for the next 2 to come out. I know they are slated for this year though.
I re-read the whole 1st 4 before I got Wolves again, just to get me back up to speed. That is a LOT of pages to remember, hehe.

Lars,
Have you read the expanded version of "THE GUNSLINGER" ? I just finished reading it it was very good. He (SK) cleaned up the writing and added a few tie ins that needed clarification. Some purists say he should have left it alone , but I think it works well. In the forward King tells his reasons behind doing it. Have you ever been to 'The Dark Tower Compendium' website? It is a must for all true DT junkies.
Long days and pleasant nights...

There will be rain if God wills it.
Yup, I went out and spent another $7.00 on the expanded Gunslinger when it came out. I found the added material (there wasn't much) to be sort of helpful, but to me, it really didn't make that much of a difference either way. It read the same to me.
I've been to that site, as well as stephenking.com, a few times. Some neat stuff. I have been meaning to google a Dark Tower forum site, as I am sure there are enough DT junkies out there to warrent one.
I am going to be one sad sack when I have read the last page of Book 7, I can promise you that. I hate finishing ANY novel, let alone my favorite one, one that has had me reading and wanting more for the last DECADE and change. I almost don't want to read book 7 for that reason. Whatever becomes of Roland and the Dark Tower I fear will be anti-climatic at this point.
But still. . .
The Dark Tower calls. . .

It must have been KA I stumbled on to the series about 12 years ago. I found "The Drawing of the Three" in a used book store in Alburquerque. So I read that 1st then tracked down the other 2 ( that's all there were then). I've been hooked ever since.

I hope that when they get around to making the film (I personally would like to see Bruce Campbell as Roland), that they do it right and not F it up like the bulk of King's films. Perhaps a HBO or Showtime mini-series would do it right.

Hmm, Susan. . .
Tough call. Is Claire Danes getting too old for the part? I don't keep up on the teeny-bopper actresses all that much. I am sure there is a decent late-teens female lead that could take the part. Just make sure she is HOT.
Susanah. . . Not Halle Barry. . .
I wonder about the choice for Cort though. He'd need a tough-as-nails type, who is a bit older. THAT would be better for a Rutger Hauer type. I'm not sure.
Leo as Cuthbert? Eck! Not how I picture him at all. I thought that was the worst pick of the group.
and for Roland. . . no question. You'll call me cliche, and I don't care. There is no one on the planet more perfect for the role.

Yup, from the moment I read the 1st book 'Gunslinger', I thought of a slightly modified version of Clint (say, in 'Fistfull of Dollars'?). A little different, but Roland has basically been a 'Clint-like' dude in my head.

When I first read the Gunslinger, back in the late 80s, a friend of mine had the original 4 part short stories that were published in magazines for that sort of thing (I cant recall which one it was), I immediately imagined Clint for the role. I have always thought that Clint was the basis for Roland in Kings mind, and although Clint is to old now to really play the role, I cant really imagine anyone else doing it effectively.
I finished Wolves of Calla last month, and I think I will go back and read the re-releases of the other books while I wait for the next installment.

I thought of a good Eddie Dean.
Vince Vaughn. Dead on. He's a smart-ass, but he can play serious. he has the look. He has the attitude, and he even has the acting style.
I just finished Wolves of the Calla over the weekend, and my plan to time finishing it with the release of book 6 was pretty close. Only 2 weeks to wait.
Anyone else here dig the end of book 5? What a cliffhanger!

Eddie Dean- got to be that from the Land of Bogs dude from the first season of 'Angel.'
Detta would probably be played by a really pretty lady, which would be a horrible shame.
Roland- hmm. An unknown, maybe. But they will cast Keanu Reeves, because they are stupid bastards.
And yes, I am still upset about the John Constantine thing.
Larspeart
May 26 2004, 11:12 AM
Eddie Dean as from the Land of Bogs? Um. . . I don't knwo about that. Also, never watched Angel.
Yup, Detta/Odetta/Susannah needs to be an AVERAGE (not good or bad looking) black women. . .with no legs (unless they want to pull some Forest Gump CGI on her).
If Keanu plays Roland, I'll shoot the director.
Someone needs to build a time machine, JUST to bring back the Clint from the 1960's-1970's to play Roland.
there is TALK (nothing more) of HBO doing an (ugh) animated version of the DT as a series/miniseries. No real details yet.

"Anyone else here dig the end of book 5? What a cliffhanger!"
Yep, and I´ll have to agree. I hope the sequel will be released on time...
"Someone needs to build a time machine, JUST to bring back the Clint from the 1960's-1970's to play Roland. "
Are you sure, I thought that Roland IS already quite old (and feels old), especially
at the end of "Wolves...", Clint as he is today would fit perfectly imho.
"Roland- hmm. An unknown, maybe. But they will cast Keanu Reeves"
xit, I heard they consider Heath Ledger to play James Bond, so what
do you expect?
Edward Norton would fit as Eddie Dean, but he is really already a bit too old now.
If they´d cast Halle Berry as Susannah I´d be really pissed off.
Larspeart
May 27 2004, 05:20 AM
He looks and feels old, but I'd imagine it would take a LOT of special effects to make Clint Eastwood move with ANY kind of the grace and agility that Roland has during moments of action. He may have 'the dry twist' but he still moves like a cat half the time. Clint is deep iinto his 70's now, and doesn't move like Jack Palence did in his (although he'd kinda be a cool choice for Roland too. . . hmmm).
Why is it that Hollywood hasn't produced a single 'man's man' for a lead since the 70's??? nothing but lame-assed prettyboys, or ridiculously huge muscle-men. Give me a guy with a 6-shooter, a 1000 yard stare, a leathered face, and a raspy voice any day.
