The best that is out already? Shawshank Redemption.
The best one that is not out, and likely never will be? The Dark Tower. That would be the best 18 hour movie I ever saw.

While it was a visually great film, I felt a bit cheated that it didn't follow the "boiler" subplot of the book. It was a great parallel to Jack's growing madness. IT was a good film .... but not the best.
Now "Maximum Overdrive".......

Well yeah, but even King himself says that he didn't like how the movie came out. He wanted it done differently. part of that was because it was done earlier in his career, and before he had his own production company.
Now, anything done with his name on it gets hsi full, 100% approval.

that's fine and dandy, but the only good movies (with or without his name) are

Movies can't be like books. They're entirely different mediums.
Read Requiem for a Dream, then watch the movie, and you'll see what I mean. Sometimes you have to betray the exact details of the book to faithfully protray the tone and intention of the book on the big screen. Hubert Selby thought Requiem was an excellent adaptation of his book, even though the movie is different in terms of story and style.
I think the Shining is a brilliant adaptation. If you saw the piece of shit re-make he supervised, you'll realize Steven King's expertise lies in novel writing, not movie-making.

You all forgot The Green Mile. I think it ties with Shawshank Redemption.
The Stand was very good, but it has some shortcomings due to budget and conforming to broadcast standards.
Kubrick's The Shining is excellent for what it is as a movie, but you have to subtract points for its departures from the novel.
The worst?
The worst I've seen is Lawnmower Man, which seems unrealeted to the short story. My fiance is the big SK fan, and she says some movies I haven't seen (Christine and some others) are even worse.

Yes, it was a made-for-TV miniseries. King didn't direct it, but he had creative control.

OK, The Stand. May be a little partial to the movie as it was my favorite book of his, but thought it did great justice to the story.

I'm about half way through my first reading of The Stand right now. I've seen the mini-series twice, once on TV, and again on DVD.
I like Mother Abigale much more on the book than in the mini-series.
If you're a fan, I recomend the commentary track on the DVD. Many of the actors dropped in to chat during the scenes they are in. Some is dreadful, but some is great, especially the parts with Migual Ferrer and the Jamey Sheridan (Randal Flagg). One especially memorable part of the commentary is at the end, where Matt Frewer (Trashcan Man) talks about taking a break in the Glitter Gulch strip club in full radiation-burn makeup.
