Why is it that we have a huge public displays of compassion and support for people whose lives have been destroyed by an uncontrollable act of nature but we stuffily ignore the lives that are being destroyed by own hands?

Context is everything.
Which lives are you referring to here;
Lives destroyed by poverty?
Lives destroyed by racism & homophobia?
Lives destroyed by a crappy misguided "justice" system?
Lives destroyed by needless war?
Lives destroyed by substance abuse?
All of the above?

onacuz you get more scene points for having your
NYPD, NYFD, "I support the Troops" gear
than you do for pouring a ladle of soup at a homeless shelter.
who's gonna know how 'good' of a person you are unless you write your own headlines?
