Payless ShoeSource Inc. today announced plans to bring shoe design in house, opening a New York design center headed by a newly hired executive formerly with Kenneth Cole Productions Inc.
Robert Mingione became vice president of product design for Payless last week. It is a new position in which he will lead a new product design group. Mingione’s first job will be to hire a design team in New York.
The Topeka-based shoe retailer said it will open a New York design center in Manhattan early next year. Payless said the center also will have a product showroom for media events that will double for investor meetings and other purposes.

Funny, Topuka, er, Topeka, KS to Manhattan, KS is only 60 miles, so it's not like it's a big move. Now how they ever got a New York designer to move to the little apple is beyond me!
