Counting the days until I can reunite with my beloved beer.
I'm beginning to think my liver is a spoiled little princess.

That needs to be spanked!

Question.
In theory, can ABV in beer increase after bottling?
GreyBoy2
If it does you'll have the added increase in CO2,
then Boom!
absinthist
There are several producers who shamelessly add spirit to boost the abv.
elfnmagik
Not add, just through continued bottle fermentation.

I believe that's what Snitters is indicating. Bottled too soon and/or too much food left or added, correct?
So if pulled off, any increase that could be contained would really be negligible?
G&C
Let it finish in the fermenter.

Give it just enough food at bottling for carbonation.

Drink 'em.
Le Gimp
According to Promash, one cup of priming sugar to a 5 gallon batch (about 3v/v CO2) will add .005 pts to the gravity. This will convert to a 0.65 ABV addition to the beer.

Correct.
Le Gimp
Relying on the original wort to provide priming sugar is risky.

You have to accuratly know your total extract and % fermentability or you will miss your mark on residual sugar for carbonation.

Let it ferment out all the way and drop the yeast before adding priming sugar and botteling it.

Boil the sugar in a pint of water and add it to the botteling bucket, then syphon the beer into it making sure to get the sugar solution well distributed, otherwise you get inconsistent carbonation.

The 1 cup of sugar I was refering to is actually 8oz measured by weight, not volume. Typically I use 3/4 cup sugar for a 5 gallon batch.
absinthist
Makes sense. It is that fookin' sugar.
elfnmagik
I asked just to clear up some confusion with a buddy just getting into brewing. He was under the impression that after bottling, the ABV will rise during the resting. I told him that in theory it may, just from residual and added sugar (priming?) and the action of the yeast, but that any increase would be negligible.

Not to make horse meat, but which is more accurate?
Le Gimp
Depends on the OG of the beer.

Beer with an og of 1.030 and a TG of 1.006 would be 3.27%abv. Add 6 oz sugar and bottle and it goes to 3.8% abv for an increase of 16%. Seems significant to me.

Beer with an OG of 1.078 and a TG of 1.020 would be 7.7%abv, add 6 oz sugar and bottle and it goes to 8.24% for an increase of only 7%. Not so significant.

But, I don't consider either to be negligible.
elfnmagik
Correct on both sides based on relativity. So then, it is a fact that a beer "can" increase its ABV after bottling.

Sorry for the redun-dunce. Back to the regular programming.

A beer can in

your chances more
than negligibly.
balzdeep
True, but a beer in the can can increase your chance of seeing one of Miss Kitty's dancing girls bloomers (if you know what I mean) at the Long Branch Saloon in Boot Hill...

How does Miss Kitty feel about White Satin Balz™?
absinthist
Dog in the Fog new taste, unfortunately not acquired by me; they have skrewed its malty character. And Okocim Mocne-could be betterer; not the one that used to be sipped.
