Absinthe, a unique licorice-tasting liquor with a high alcohol volume (50 to 70 percent), is derived from various herbs: anise, hyssop, veronica, fennel and especially wormwood. It is the latter which produces the psychoactive constituent, thujone, which is responsible for producing mysterious effects such as hallucinations.

In most of the European Union, absinthe may be sold as long as it contains less than 10mg of thujone. In Canada, absinthe is completely legal and on sale in some liquor stores at $50 to $60 per bottle. All governments are concerned that homemade absinthe can be potentially fatal, however.
