Well, I just had to laugh —

Maybe ktvu.com will put it on their web site, 'cuz they just aired the story.

First absinthe approved for stateside manufacture and distribution in nearly a century.

It’s a nasty looking, brown swill. The pile of star anus didn't raise my hopes.

St. George Spirits Absinthe Verte Released and Available for Sale December 21st

It seems only fitting that on this day 74 years ago, the 21st Amendment was ratified and Prohibition ended. Today we announce the sale of the first domestically produced absinthe since the ban in 1912, St. George Spirits Absinthe Verte!

St. George Spirits Absinthe Verte is made with fine brandy, star anise, mint, wormwood, lemon balm, hyssop, meadowsweet, basil, fennel, tarragon and stinging nettles. This infamous liquor reveals seductive flavors of anise complimented with sweet grassy tones, light citrus, white pepper, and light menthol notes.

It will be available for sale in the distillery store starting December 21st for $75 for a 750ml bottle.

The use of star anise and no green anise makes me dubious...
TheScrin
At least it is a step in the right direction and isn't a Czeckerland style oil mix.
Crosby
And, it prolly makes for a good salad dressing.

If'n that was what they were really doing, they'd be ahead of the game.

Mmmmm, grassy tones . . .
GreyBoy2
A disturbing sounding herb blend.
Bognoz
Waiter, is that available as soup, please?
Louched Liver
Grassy, menthol, stinging nettle.

Sounds like they tossed in a pack
o' ciggys they found in a field.

Perique Special Edition???
DrinkSlinger
I believe Grim already relayed an expert account of this "absinthe".
absinthist
If we are thinkin' about the same, he praised the distiller and wished them best. Still, the very first review is to come. So, Grimmy, have ya had it while cruisin' the plant? Yer impressions?
Porkio
It seems St. George's intention was not to create something traditional, but instead to make something original. Omitting green anise entirely goes beyond being original though. Without that, there is nothing to smooth over strident grassy tones you'll get from the other herbs, and there will also be nothing to reduce the acrid bite from the Star Anise. If the fennel ends up being the wrong kind, this could end up tasting like a distilled version of Sebor. Or maybe it will be great, but at least on paper, I don't see how. Perhaps the Brandy base will round it out?

Before one can reinvent the wheel, one must learn how to make the wheel. It does not appear they followed that path...
Louched Liver
Point driven home.

replace the lifesaving device-like object with a decent cork, add another 250ml cut 25% of the price, then mebbe, just mebbe, the price would be kinda fair.

or is it just the combination of ingredients that require such extreme safety measures?
Louched Liver

Not unless they're using some of that gazillion dollar 1811 xit that Oxy sold recently, it won't...it may not taste horrible, but with that bizarre herb bill, I think the best we can hope for is a strange experiment. Perhaps after the initial reactions start filtering in, Lance'll wake up.
Off. Jack Batemaster
Lance, schmance! (lost my pants)...
Louched Liver
Callin' the Cuff...

Will be in The BUff!
