Kidney ring preyed on unwilling donors

QUOTE
GURGAON, India — As the anesthetic wore off, Naseem Mohammed said, he felt an acute pain in the lower left side of his abdomen. Fighting drowsiness, he fumbled beneath the unfamiliar folds of a green medical gown and traced his fingers over a bandage attached with surgical tape. An armed guard by the door told him that his kidney had been removed.

Mohammed was the last of about 500 Indians whose kidneys were removed by a team of doctors running an illegal transplant operation, supplying kidneys to rich Indians and foreigners, police officials said. A few hours after his operation on Jan. 24, the police raided the clinic and moved him to a government hospital.

Many of the donors were day laborers, like Mohammed, picked up from the streets with the offer of work, driven to a well-equipped private clinic, and duped or forced at gunpoint to undergo operations. Others were bicycle rickshaw drivers and impoverished farmers who were persuaded to sell their organs, which is illegal in India.

Although several kidney rings have been exposed in India in recent years, the police said the scale of this one was unprecedented. Four doctors, five nurses, 20 paramedics, three private hospitals, 10 pathology clinics and five diagnostic centers were involved, said Mohinder Lal, the police officer in charge of the investigation.

Not just in India.

Nurse Admits Plucking Body Parts From 244 Corpses For Resale

QUOTE
PHILADELPHIA -- A nurse has admitted he stole body parts from 244 corpses in Philadelphia for reuse in unsuspecting patients.

Lee Cruceta of Monroe, New York, is charged as the lead cutter in a group that prosecutors say trafficked in stolen, often diseased body parts.

Prosecutors also expect accused ringleader Michael Mastromarino, of New York, to plead guilty. Three Philadelphia funeral directors are also charged.

Cruceta's plea allows him to serve concurrent sentences in New York and Philadelphia of about six to 20 years for conspiracy, theft and other charges.

I would have to sell one of my organs to be able to buy this beer.

Dang. I was thinking of getting my hood pierced, but a kidney ring sounds far more au courant.

Ha! Nice call-back.

It's usually nice to get back to the hood.

I'd put my
left nut up
against a hood.

You had? How did he take it?

Can anybody else feel
the swelling organ
music in the background?
Bognoz
Or is it in
the fore?
greeneyes
If by "swelling organ music" you mean the "strains" of "steatosis hepatis," then yes.
Bognoz
You can do what you want
with your Liver, but as for me,
I like to think that a nice
alcohol bath melts away all
the worries and fatty deposits.
Bognoz
And don't try to tell me that
it don't work that way. I'm telling
you that it's all play anyway.

Although the illegal organs aren't always the ones that get ya... this happened in 2004 -- Glad I am Vaccinated:

"ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Rabies spread by organs taken from an infected donor has killed three transplant recipients, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.

"This has never happened before," said Dr. Mitch Cohen, an infectious disease expert at the CDC, in a conference call with reporters.

A fourth recipient died during the actual transplant operation, before there was time to develop the disease, officials said.

Rabies was also determined to be responsible for the death of the organ donor.

The unprecedented case began nearly two months ago, shortly after an Arkansas man suffered a brain hemorrhage and died at Christus Saint Michael Healthcare Center in Texarkana, Texas.

The man's lungs, kidneys and liver were transplanted May 4.

The impact of the virus began to emerge within weeks.

The liver recipient died June 7; one kidney recipient died June 8 and the other kidney recipient died June 21. The patient who died was undergoing lung transplant surgery."
