Full Version: Just 2 vintage bottles?

...Of vintage absinthe, then which ones would you get?

If I could get my mits on 2 bottles, then I would want to have a bottle of Terminus and Berger. Why? Well I'm not really sure, they just sound tasty!

I also wouldn't mind getting ahold of a vintage bottle of nasty swill absinthe. I'd like to know what sorta dangerous ingredients actually went into that stuff.
Porkio
I'd pick Edouard Pernod & Premier Fils.
Louched Liver
Any 2 anyone would give me.
Fluffy G
Well there was that vintage bottle of Ulex...

I would gladly try any two that came my way, though I doubt any shall!

But I too would love to find a bottle of the real crazy-making, ear-chopping, bad shit absinthe. There don't seem to be many around. Perhaps not surprising, since the good stuff was the stuff that people of means drank, and the stuff that wound up getting stashed away after the ban. People don't keep Mad Dog in their wine cellars either.

I think at least some of those toxic ingredients used in the inferior absinthes were actually used in real medicine during the 19th C. Antimony comes to mind.

One could even try tasting it, if an intact bottle were found. Probably a sip wouldn't be enough to cause any long-term effects. We could see if it tasted anything like Hills.
Crosby
Berger & Edouard Pernod.

Excuse me, but I happen to have a vintage bottle of 8 year old Thunder Bird in my liquor cabinet.

Edouard Pernod & Premier Fils. Course, if someone was to put ANY vintage in my paw, I'd be pretty happy.

I'd like to have a bottle of prohibition era Legendre Absinthe, (If any exists)
Otherwise, it would be Edouard Pernod, or the Berger, that people have raved over.

It would be interesting to try the Lillet Absinthe, Terminus, Premier Fils, Duval etc......I wonder how much of those still exist.

On the American side, has anyone ever found a bottle of Green Opal, or Milky Way? (are they even real)

I wonder if those in the know, could comment on some of the lesser known brands that are in the hands of collectors. (even empty bottles)
Just curious what is out there.

There were apparently a few short lived American brands, none of which I believe were any good. One was made in Boston, and was called "Butterfly Absinthe". There was a 1.5 pint bottle on eBay a year ago. It went for over $400! Another brand was made in Michigan, which Ned told me of, but I can't remember the name.

There were also a few "absinthes" made by cordial makers based in New Orleans, but I'm not sure of their brand names either.
Absinthe_1900
I think those (on eBay) may have been a substitute ala Herbsaint, though interesting in their own right.

I seen the mention in Conrads book of "Green Opal" & "Milky Way", and I think it has been alluded to, that those two may have been made in New Orleans.
But as far as I have seen little has surfaced on those two.

It would be nice to see something surface on these.

Amazingly it doesn't cost anywhere near that much.

It may be of some interest for those who wish bottles of Berger and E.Pernod to know that Christian-Frederic Berger began his carrer as a business traveler for E.Pernod before opening his own distillery... A small world we could say.

Two other less common brands would tickle my interest : Bazinet and Bailly .

Of course, so far the Absinthe brands dictionary only list letters A and B ... I can`t wait for the other volumes ... (After a few glass, it`s easy to imagine such a book as a real ordering list ).

Philly Steak and Cheesinthe?

That would definitely come with ONE EENCH OF CHEEZE!
Fluffy G
Is that bottle of Pernot from the Un Emile distillery? If so, then I didn't know that they used added coloring to their squeezins. Or did they just mean plants from the coloring step?
Maturin
Interesting, the label says it was "Prepared and bottled in USA" in Detroit of all places. Could someone explain why this is?
