Hey folks--long time lurker, first time poster. I recently received some of Moonman's #26 and have tried it once. I love the aroma, but haven't yet decided on the taste.

Has anyone else tried this stuff? What do you think?

(BTW--Yeah, I know this guy is not exactly Mr. Popularity around here nowadays,
I'm honestly interested in people's opinion of the product.)

Happy new year all!
Crosby
He's neither unpopular, nor unwelcome here. The #26 is just fine!
Larspeart
I drank a fair amount of the #26 tonight (alongh with gallons of everything else), and I have to say that the #26 is hellagood!

I have a full bottle of #28 on the way right now, and I can't wait for it to arrive!

Moonman is all-good in my book. Others here will tell you another story, but he and I don't have the history that other folks have. MM is just dandy in my book mate!
Absinthe_1900
I rang in the New Year with #26, and the first-timers that sampled some were very happy to have tried it.
Maturin
I haven't tried the 26 but we started off last night with some of the 27 and I agree with Lars. IT WAS HELLA GOOD!!!!!! yes1.gif

We were lucky enough to ring in the New Year with 2 glasses each of MoonMan's #27 (the muscat base version).

I am beyond impressed; I am blown away!! This stuff is awesome! It is one of the best tasting alcohols I have had of any sort, & far & away the best absinthe I've sampled.

There is no evidence of alcohol in the taste or bouquet. None. To my damaged shnozz, the bouquet is floral with a slight "woody" (ok go ahead with the puns) undertone. It louches beautifully (Maturin will be posting photos). Initially a Jade- the only REAL Burnt™ absinthe green, as water is added gradients go from almost clear at the bottom of our reservoir glass to an emerald level (the emerald is only evident at the 1:1 stage) finally to the classic vintage green and cloudy louche. Beautiful! The taste is equally delightful, primarily minty without mouthwash overtones. I think there were some citrus notes as well. Almost no anise in the taste, although the louche indicated it was quite present.

After 2 glasses louched at 3:1 I felt mildy tipsy & very mellow, almost heroin-mellow. The rumoured aphrodisiac properties were also in evidence, leading to an extremely early bedtime here in our house....Drunk.sml

Thanks MoonMan & Wolfgang for making sure we got this in time for New Years Eve. I have no idea how I'm going to last until our 2 full size bottles arrive in March! It's going to be a long 3 months for sure! nopity.gif

Oh cute...

Maturin/Lysistrata, is Slider a Sun Conure?

I am trying to decide what breed of parrot to keep in the next few years.

The big challenge is, my roommate wants to get a kitten eventually (not right now). I don't like to leave birds in cages all the time, since no cage is really big enough for a parrot, although it's necessary when no one is home.

Our theory is, if she gets a kitten when the parrot is already an adult bird, and the kitten is declawed, the kitten will rapidly learn (with encouragement from the parrot) that the political economy of the house does not allow parrot-eating, and will behave accordingly.

It probably helps if the parrot is some kind of large fierce bird, like maybe a macaw. But macaws like to scream a lot, and we don't like the idea of that.

Any suggestions, or is this just kind of a bad idea? I've heard many stories of parrots and cats living together, and even becoming friends, but a lot of people advise against it.
greeneyes
Please don't declaw. Besides being bad all-around for the cat, it can turn even the most mild-mannered kitty into a chronic biter. Trimming claws is easy, especially if you start while the animal is young. Your vet can show your roommate how.

I successfully kept a parrot with several cats for a while. I found the bird under a car and took it in. The key was supervision, although Atilla stood his or her ground swimmingly. Whenever the cats would go near it, Atilla would shriek at them hideously and holler the only word it managed to pick up, "RANDOM. RANDOM." The cats hated that. They went to pains to avoid that bird.
lysistrata
perruche, yes, Slider IS a Sun Conure, good eye! yelclap.gif

I'm not an expert on birds, but I've lived with everything from Macaws thru various conures to parakeets most of my life. If you don't want a noisy bird, stay away from the Sun Conure & almost all parrots! Slider screams loudly when: it's sunny, it's morning, he's hungry, he's happy, he's not happy, he's greeting you, he wants to be picked up...you get the picture....Also, almost all of the parrots, from conures up, require A MINIMUM of 2 hours per day out of their cage interacting with their people. Psittacines (parrot species) live in large communities & mate for life, communicating with their flock thru screeching thruout the day. So, a parrot in a living room considers it's humans "the flock" &, usually picks 1 human as "mate" (Maturin got that role!). Fill in the blanks, behaviorally....

Cockatiels & parakeets/budgerigars make REALLY good apartment birds. I've had both (have 2 budgies now) & can vouch that even tho they're small, they have just as much personality as their larger/louder brethren. Plus, they are MUCH less expensive to feed etc.

In the end, you know better than anyone how much time you have to give a bird; that's really the determining criteria of which sort to get. As far as the cat q goes, I've never had one, so can't comment on that, but greeneyes already did a fine job!

angrysoapbox.sml ok, returning the Forum to absinthe chat, sorry to de-rail it, folks... sheep.gif

Yup, I had the last of my #26 on New Years, and I am waiting on that darn #28. Since it is supposed to be another variant of the #27 (non-muscat though, right?), it should be a goodie. I must say I am both glad and jealous of all of your folks who had your #27 in time for New Years.

However, considering my state by about 2:30-3:00AM on Jan 1st, I doubt it would have mattered. I ended up calling all my friends at 3AM to wish them a drunken Happy New Year, lost my phone under the bed (don't ask, cause I don't remember), and talked to my cat about how mad my girlfriend was gonna be at 'us' (As I decided at the time that the cat was drinking at least as much as I was) tomorrow morning for 'our' drunken antics. I remember my cat making weird faces at me and pawing my face, like 'damn man. You're smashed!'.

In other words, I had a GREAT night! No better way to ring in the new year.

Also avaliable to keep birds safe from cats is a product called Soft Paws. These are soft plastic claw-shaped sheaths that are glued on the claws. The glue is not permanent or toxic. These come in sizes to fit kittens through large cats.Soft Paws are advertised in the back of cat magazines,or I believe you can order them from your vet.

Listen to Lystie about declawing. Not only may you end up with a cat that bites, but some cats are traumatised by the experience.

You may end up with a cat that hides most of the time. Also, not only are the claws removed but the entire first joint of the toes are removed.

If you do have your cat declawed,it must be kept indoors at all times. It will not be able to adequately defend itself once declawed, although most cats can still climb.

If you raise both cat and bird together from baby-hood,you should have less problems with aggressive behavior.

You are truly lucky souls.

The Moonman absinthe sounds delicious, and it's various shades of green are lovely to behold.

I am glad you had such a happy new year celebration.

More bird talk.

My father had a cockatiel that screeched day and night, unless her cage was covered by a cloth. The sound was piercing, and could be heard from quite a distance.

I think she would have been better off with a companion. My father did take her out of the cage occasionally, and she was calmer then.

I do'nt think he should have kept this type of bird as a pet;he did'nt have the time to devote to her.

We also had a cat(declawed-adopted that way) that never annoyed the bird.

OK-I resampled #26 on New Years Eve (to kick things off) and am in agreement with most here--it's pretty tasty stuff. I particularly enjoy the freshness in the nose--it's clear that a lot of care and quality goes into the production of this product. Unfortunately, as the evening wore on, many bottles of wine were also consumed. They tended to get cheaper toward the end of the evening. Wound up sleeping in till noon, wife and I taking turns being hung over. Can't blame the Moonman, but there was that unfortunate atavistic feeling of the taste of absinthe as I bemoaned my fate the next morning. However, after needed bed rest, I was able to rally on Thursday night.

Don't worry Mayor, I haven't abandoned the ship. I was just very busy driving here and there accros the frozen land and partying during the holydays.

Upon returning to the Big City from the Humanitarian Mission to Syracuse, I found a little pink slip instructing me that a package awaited my convenience at the post office. In a separate envelope, I found the label for something called 'absinthe.' The label stated that it was the 27th of its kind.

Come Monday, I trotted off for the post place, what for to retrieve my package. Turned out to be a bottle of massage oil or some such. I drank it anyway. It tasted, uh, pretty good.

The 27 was the one made in the heady, wine-spirit crazy days after LoucheFest. I was a little dubious of the claims (by some) that wine spirit makes that much of a difference. Booze is booze, right? I stand corrected. The quality of the alcohol is out of this world, and the mouthfeel thing (something else about which I was somewhat dubious) is obvious: soft and clean as freshly-laundered satin sheets.

In short, Moonman has done himself proud. This is one of the finest vertes I have had, and a Great Leap Forward over the previous greenies from the great, white north.

Good work, man!

Birds:

Thanks for the great advice, Greeneyes, Lystie, and Felis, but I did a little research and found out that you don't WANT your parrot and your cat to be friends, even if it were possible... turns out, cats carry a bacterium, Pasteurella multocida, which is deadly to parrots and other birds. This is why many birds rescued from cats will die from infection anyway, unless they're given antibiotics.

I may try to find a Senegal parrot. They're small, relatively quiet, but very friendly and fearless. I'd considered an Umbrella Cockatoo, since they're so cute and cuddly, but they turn into such spoiled little children. One of my favorite used bookstores keeps several birds in the shop, including one of these cockatoos. He loves to have his head scratched, but I have not dared to do so, because he gets very, very angry when you stop... blink.gif

I had two adopted parakeets/budgies over the past decade or so. Delightful little birds, friendly to a fault, great talkers. They had the run of the house, so they would fly around and perch on people's shoulders, eyeglasses, etc. But each one only lived about 3 years after I adopted it, then died from liver failure. Unfortunately the species is quite susceptible to that.

What can I say? They always wanted to do shots when I got off work...
Zouave
I'm also very behind vis-a-vis Moonman's squeezins.. The last I bought was #24 (Larmes de Lune), because I had quite a lot of AbsAuth to get through at that time. The bad news is, I'm running out. The good news is.. as Moon's products age a little bit, they get better and better. I have a little 23 left and one more shot of 24, and because I drink them sparingly, they've been mellowing nicely over the last few months. Well.. "mellowing nicely" is an understatement. They've improved significantly, each glass a real luxury now. jarswim.gif

Actually (& this is not a criticism of you Perruche) budgies are only susceptible to liver problems when fed a primarily seed diet. Altho they eat seeds in the wild, seeds have such a high fat content that when the birds are captive, they don't use enough energy to burn off the fat. Thus, liver problems.

My budgies LOVE sprouts, celery, fruit sticks, etc. When fed primarily on fresh fruits & veggies, they can live to be 25-30 years old.

The same diet tips hold true for larger species as well. Slider eats very little seed; he even joins us for dinner nightly, having his own plate. His favorites include egg (scrambled), potato & garlic bread. He also goes nuts for pizza crust, apples, oatmeal, a corner of my breakfast pastry & whole grain bread.

So, please Perruche, whatever bird you get, make sure they have a varied diet that includes few seeds. Ok, lecture over. angrysoapbox.sml
perruche_verte
I agree. The ones I adopted had been fed mainly on seeds before they came to me. I did my best, but their previous experience made it hard for them to kick the millet habit.

The next bird I take responsibility for is going to come from a well-recommended aviary that raises chicks on a good varied diet. I really liked the idea of adopting birds that needed a good home, but it's too heartbreaking dealing with the results of their previous training/abuse.

Birds are not living decoration. I wish people understood that.
Felis Catus
Perruche

Birds are not living decoration, nor are fish, which people often neglect.

Some people see pets in general as living decoration;they put down food and water(on a timely basis,if the animal is lucky) and then pay little or no attention to the animal.

Perruche or Lystie-Do you know of a good website on birds as pets?I may try to
talk my manager into allowing a small, quiet bird in the building. So far from the info
you and Lystie have provided ,parakeets or budgies seem like a good choice.
Are'nt most parrots quite expensive?

I would like a rat or two,but have already received thumbs down on any type of
rodent.

Of course,I would like to have a cat,but the manager dislikes both cats and dogs.

Thanks for the info on the cat disease,Perruche.I would like to move as soon as
possible, and will only rent in a building that accepts cats. How close to bird and cat have to come to each other for the bird to pick up that disease?I do not want to get a bird now if it would be in danger of becoming ill from a pet cat.

Thanks to both of you for all the information,

You only want a bird so that you can chase it around like it's a toy and then kill it when it's half dead so that you can eat it.

Typical cat, you are.
