We regularly talk about the commercial (and somewhat less commercial DG.gif ) brands we like, but what about the ones we don't like?

This is your chance to fess up and describe the most nasty, wretched and vile absinthes you've had the misfortune to have tasted.

Spanish, German, Czeckerland.... what have you regretted? Might as well give the brand and circumstance as well. Like, you got introduced to absinthe by your "friend" who had a bottle of.... or whatever the case was.

Think of this as both a romp down memory lane and a list for the newbies of what not to bother buying/trying.
louchefabrik
My worst was also my first,(I'm talking about absinthe NONO.gif ) Mari Mayans

I still have half a bottle hanging around.

What's really scarey is to go over to Livejournal.com and check out the comments on Absinthelovers.

I've seen the comment that MM is actually my favorite. basher.gif

It's like being a fan of finely crafted microbrew beer listening to people discuss the quality and differences of Bud and Michelob. blink.gif

I have a bottle of MM, minus one shot. It's been aging nicely, for quite some time.

Feh! Staroplzenecky is far more evil than MM, and so is Hill's ('xcept Raindog actually likes Staro scared.gif).

These two make the Staro Red seem positiviely delicious (instead of unbelievably
boring, like pure distilled ps.jpg ).

Come to think of it, only Staro is really berk.gif evil -- Hill's just tastes like high-alcohol Listerine.

I have almost two full liters of Huguet.

I tasted a glass... or actually, a sip. The rest went to the sewer creatures.
I gave a sample to a friend. He tasted a sip, and the rest sits in his cupboard.

Here's to Huguet in the pretty bottle. May it age gracefully and never be consumed.
Larspeart
I would think anything Czeckerland would be at the top of most people's list.

I have had the distinct pleasure of not having a bad absinthe at this point, largely because I did my research before placing an order, and also thanks to folks like yourselves. My 1st was La Fee, followed by a dozen or so bottles of assorted UE's, and a bottle of MM. No baddies yet.

Part of me (the self-loathing part, crouchmean.jpg ) want to get a bottle of truely bad'sinthe just to see how good I have had it. Then, the logical part of me says 'Absinthe costs enough as it is without you throwing money at the demons at Hills!'.

Who's got the funk? Serpis! Nasty. Bad bad bad. Better than the Pernod Pastis, though.

I can't stand that melted rubber funk that Deva has.
I still have a bottle of Mari Mayans that may get an old age pension (looks nice on a shelf).

I'm in the same boat with Lars. I did my research first so I've missed out on the really nasty stuff. My least favorite is Guy so that's the bottle I pour for company as an intro to absinthe.
qeantk
My first bottle was Hill's, enough said. For some reason, I didn't let that dissuade me. It's still sitting there on the shelf looking neon-green. In my defense I didn't buy it - a friend brought it back from a trip to Prague.

The most horrible experience I have had is with Perigan! I think Hillīs is lovely when compared to this brand. If you want to finish most of the bad absinthes you can mix them with coca cola but this Perigan is an exception even in this sense! zygi.gif

'cuz they are totally nasty and undrinkable.
perruche_verte
Maybe that's what the people who sent me Gruene Fee had in mind. After truthfully describing it as having no anis and no louche, they say to add Coca-Cola to it for "the best mix drink you'll ever have".

Perhaps they meant the last? smiley_abxy.gif

I'm afraid 3-year Havana Club remains my favorite thing to mix with Coke. The Coke can be left out if necessary.

The Gruene Fee came by mistake, through a shipping mix-up. It's not entirely undrinkable, sort of like an off-tasting creme de menthe, but it's sure not absinthe. It came in a very graceful long-necked bottle, and will sit on the shelf looking pretty for a long time.

How would you rate the Havana Club, compared to some of the more available better Rums? (Excluding the usual commercial swill)

I'm considering ordering a bottle.
perruche_verte
Just try it! Take advantage of the courier option now offered by our Iberian friends.

I know less about rum and comparative rum-making practices than I know about some other liquors, but there seems to be a unique dimension to the Havana Clubs I've tried. The 3-year has a pronounced vanilla flavor I really enjoy. It beats the Barbancourt 3-year, IMO.

Anyone bringing Czeckerland "Filterated Czeckerland Xit" to LF04?

I'm curious to taste for myself to see if it could be as bad as what I've read, but I would never pay $70-$100+ for a whole bottle to find out.

I was planning on ordering some Segarra Gin, and will add a bottle of Havana Club to that order.

I'm sure someone has a wretched bottle of Czeckerland swill they are dying to unload. Tell me how bad it is.

And don't forget to use the 'Classic Czeckerland Fire Ritual'!

Ferri and Perigan were the worst. Pernod 68 was bad but not THAT bad. As for rum. Havana Club and Black Seal are the Best.

Black Seal. Fantastic stuff!

Joalco
Zelena Muza.

WORST. ABSINTHE. EVER.

I've had wormwood-steeped-in everclear batches that were more palatable...
Raindog
Montana 68 is the worst "absinthe" I have ever tasted, tasted like lemon pledge. I took another glass of Serpis tonight (been in the cabinet for quite a while) and yes, it still sucks.
Zouave
The worst? Hmm.. so many..

Truly awful: Hill's, Staroplzsmegma, Fruko Schulz, King of Spirits.

Simply bad: Mari Mayans, Huguet,

Disappointing: Oxygenee, Lemercier Abisinthe 72, Versinthe Blanche, Fougerolles 72

Just don't like that much: F. Guy, Serpis..

These are the commercials that come to mind, anyway.. At this point, I only buy the Emiles, Segarra, Kubler 57 and La Fee, and with the value of the USD tanking, I'm being forced to narrow the list even further.
Raindog
I don't get the revulsion that most seem to have for Staroplzenecky, I'm quite fond of it.

Why???

Simply because when I first became interested in absinthe in 1993 & 1994, there wasn't the (relatively) easy access to commercial or HG that there is today. Even the venerable Sepulchritude site was fairly lacking until 1998 or 1999. Myself and some people I met throughout the years had tried fashioning those nasty concoctions. Needless to say, you try it once, and you don't need to do it again.
der grune Teufel
I had a bottle of Sebor's collecting dust and thought.....why not try it with a slow drip and a sugar cube.It couldn't be nearly as bad as I remembered it to have been.Surprise, it was absolutely undrinkable. Straight down the sink. I keep it around for the poor fool who thinks it should be drunk in shots.
Alcokevorkian
I only know that I have drank booze that most of you would shudder at the taste. And I enjoyed it. I used to drink moonshined booze, homeade here in Bama on a regular basis, way back in high school. Most Absinthe I have drank was not all that bad. Not the cats meow but, it was really not that bad. Most every one at this forum knows what good absinthe is. But, is the other stuff as bad as some I have had? Nope! H.G. is for the most part better grade sinthe tahn commericial but, most commercial grade sinthe is still drinkable booze in my book. As long as it is at least spanosh or at the very least sebor. yeah, I know, sebor sucks, well I don't agree, it ain't the best but. ir ain't the worst either. Fook it all, I like sebor, at least the original sebor anyway.

Gonna have to agree with JP and Mal-odor with the Perigan tune. Only absinthe that I deemed death by drain. Two runner-ups but not yet dead are Pernod 68 followed by Huguet.

Oxygenee has been permanently deemed to the cabinet, I think. I like it alot, but rarely want a glass (although I think it's better in the summer).

The closest to Czeckerland I tasted was MH, and while sweet and nasty, not alltogether the worst thing I've drank (and I had it gone before hearing about mixing it with Red Bull). And I personally enjoyed M68 -- reminescent of Lasala.

By the way, tried Smutty's MH and Red Bull at LF03--NASTY! Ugh! <shivers>

post-6-1069831687.gif Hey ballz, run that shat by me again, in ainglish!
balzdeep
Perigan sucks the tits off a boar, but P68 and Huguet ain't without shoving their noses where they don't belong, either.

Oxygenee is crisper than a farmer's market, but gets little business.

Austria isn't Czeckerland's dixie, but MH sure is. M68 tastes prettier than a 20 dollar whore, much like Lasala.

Licking a horny toad is prettier than sucking MH and Red Bull.
Fluffy G
The worst commercial would be any brand that decides to leave barf chunks of wormwood in their swill.

If you've still got Lemercier *and* F. Guy, try to mix them 50/50 -- I'm starting to like that better than my UE68 Blanche (yesterday, after a 50/50 AL72/FG, that UE68 alcohol tasted *very* aggressive...no wonder LdF is bringing out 60% White Fairy).

I read the article in that men's magazine last February
and ordered something from there.
