Feature films:
Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi).
Don't know if it counts, but unbelievably good. Unfortunately, the region 2 DVD sucks rocks (bad colours).

Series: 'Bebop'. 'Lupin' is second, for sentimental reasons.
Movie: 'Spirited Away.'
Lately I've been hearing about Satoshi Kon. Anybody vouch for him?
'Grave of the Fireflies' was good but I had to be restrained from slitting my wrists as the credits ran. I don't think I'll be watching that one again anytime soon.

I've seen Perfect Blue. The film was done well, but I wasn't all that impressed with it. I guess I just didn't like the story very much. It's kinda like a modern version of Psycho. I'm just not a big fan of those sorts of films.
These excerpts from amazon should give you an idea of what it's about.
"Perfect Blue is an adult psycho-thriller that uses the freedom of the animated image to create the subjective reality of a young actress haunted by the ghost of her past identity....
....Director Satoshi Kon, adapting the novel by Yoshikazu Takeuchi, shows us the world from her schizophrenic perspective: days blur, dreams cross over into the waking world, the TV show blends into her real life, until her life merges with her part and she can't separate the ghosts from the real-life stalkers."

One of the reasons I like the movie so much is because I'm a big fan of the TV series. The characters have more dimension to them if you've seen the tv series. The movie could still be a good intro since it runs alot like an elongated version of the tv show.

Took my daughter with me to see "Tokyo Godfathers" today - a very enjoyable flick. We also saw a preview for "The Triplets of Belleville" which looked good as well -- reminded me slightly of the design & animation style of "Metropolis."

Samurai Jack is the bomb shit. Tartakovsky is very original (finally got the name right, Sheep, Lamb and I were batting it around last time we hung out...).
And of course Miyazaki is a deity.
To be honest though, my favourite animation is stop-motion by the likes of Jan Svankmeier and The Brothers Quay. It doesn't get any more genious than that, my friends.

If you've seen Tool's videos, they borrow heavily from the Brothers Quay style.
Your mind will be melted when you watch them:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...&s=dvd&n=507846In one of their shorts they used stop motion to animate iron filings! Coolest thing I've ever seen. Little fuzzy threads of iron dancing all over a table...

I found this to be a detriment on the movie actually. The shows themselves run more as vignettes than as a continuous story arc, so a longer format isnt nessecarily a good thing. Take for instance, I don't have the title on hand so bare with me, the episode concerning the tape Fay made as a child. Other than maybe exposition on her character it has little place in the larger scheme, yet its one of my favorite episodes for its poignancy.

Agreed. The motive force of the show wasn't ever the action plots where they go and hunt the bad guys. It was the episodes where they took these otherwise cliched, two-dimensional characters (Spike is just a warm-up of Lupin, Jet of Jigen, and Fay of Fumiko) and gives them interesting backstories.

Where would Ed fit into the Lupin series? Maybe the wackey antics of Zenigata?
And Yeah, the lack interesting backstories was a detriment to the movie as a whole. They ended up focusing those types of stories on new characters who had no baring on the series.

Finally watched all of the 26 episodes in Neon Genesis Evangelion.
At first glance I wasn’t very impressed with this anime. The idea of another plotless anime w/giant mindless robots struck me as very boring and unoriginal. However the first two episodes were interesting enough, so I decided to give the whole thing a whirl. The beginning 10 episodes music selection was horrendous. Asuka’s theme music sounded like something from Dukes of Hazard. What were they thinking?
Gradually the series started to develop a thick plot with an interesting character-driven story line. The series ended up being loaded with psychological and religious symbolism. From about episode 14 on it just kept on getting better. By the time it got to the last 2 episodes the story line had become very philosophical. I was left scratching my head when it was all over. I’m definitely going to have to watch this one again. All in all, I really enjoyed this anime, and I’m now looking forward to seeing the Evangelion feature films.

The movie: "End of Evangelion" explains a lot about the last 2 episodes.
Some knowledge of Hebrew "mythology" and the dead sea scrolls helps as well.
A lot of people don't make it through the first few episodes, expecting another mecha anime.
The series starts slow, but it's not what you expect.

Rurouni Kenshin aka Samurai X can be good and bad. For example: the TV series SUCKS! Seriously... it tries too hard to be funny and once you've seen the movies "Trust" & "Betrayal", which are some of the bloodiest anime I've seen, you just can't appreciate what the TV showis doing.
