There has been so little mention of this particular absinthe, and the comments I did read seemed so intriguing that I decided I wanted Muse Verte 68 to be my first non LdF commercial purchase.
I am so glad I did!
When the bottle is first opened, the bouquet is lovely. Herbs, some floral accents, slight anise, just a tad of alcohol heat...all well balanced. I was definitely looking forward to my post-work louche!

I used the photo above because it was a nice picture in general, but the color of the liquor is a bit off... Muse Verte straight is actually an olive-green color. The shot below is much closer to what you'll really see....

Once we started the drip, the louche was intense & impressive! It was beyond a doubt the best louche I have seen. The bottle states "no added coloring. no sugar. no preservatives" so the louche is completely derived from the anise & other ingredients.
It is the true 19th century louche, celadon green & THICK. The aroma at this point has become more floral with almost no alcohol in it.

No other photos came out well, so I'll cut the photo essay portion out, but to continue the review:
As the drip continued, the louche also intensifed. It was beautiful! We stopped adding water at about 3:1, & the final product looked like a more intense Fougerolles. It was the same pale-yellowish green but thicker.
The bouquet was like a more floral Foug, without the wine spirits odor underlying it. Well-balanced, it truly was a "bouquet", with herbal & floral notes, anise, & slightly sweet.
Ah, the first sip! We had used 1 sugar cube apiece, & with 1 lump the taste has just a slight underlying bitterness; probably the wormwood asserting itself. I added about a teaspoon of sugar, & the bitterness disappeared entirely. The taste after adding the extra sugar was, in a word, delightful! Both Maturin & I agreed that (barring MoonMan) this was the best absinthe we've sampled to date. Muse Verte 68 is almost exactly what I had hoped/expected absinthe to taste like when I first decided to purchase a bottle.
So, there it is. I know this may be heretical, but of the commercial absinthes I've been priviledged to sample, Muse Verte 68 is definitely my favorite!
OK, everyone go ahead &

Huh. Who'd a thunk it?
My (obviously erroneous) impression had been that Muse Verte was a middling blend. I guess I haven't been paying attention. Maybe I'll have to pick me up some of that stuff.
Thanks for the review.

Not to be condescending, but keep in mind that our new friend is at the begining of the absinthe learning curve. The importance of louche in the review is indicitive of that. More experienced pallates would probably fall in line with the other reviews you've read.
I'm sure he enjoyed it, which is good.
Thank you for the review. It's nice to see people enjoying commercial absinthe again...

"he" did, & I did too!
And DS, while I may be fairly new, I have bottles of each of the LdF's except Sapin & White Fairy, I've had the MoonMan #27, ET #8 & 9; I may not have sampled much on the "swill" end, but I believe I have a fairly good representation of the "finer" end. And, other than the MoonMan #27 (which I was blown away by but can't get more of) I genuinely like the Muse Verte the best.
I may be new to absinthe, but I spent over 20 years collecting wines & visiting wineries in the Santa Ynez & Napa valleys, so I do know what I like when it comes to taste & bouquet. I have said repeatedly elsewhere that my taste is a little plebian & tends towards prefering sweeter & fruitier alcohols. It may not be what the snobs call "sophisticated" but I've spent my entire life being an iconoclast in other areas, so why not in the area of absinthe as well!
Just don't be condescending. It does neither of us much credit.

And you're sure it was Muse Verte 68, the absinthe, and not Muse Verte, the pastis?
Still, if I remember correctly, it's an oil mix, and from my experiences, I probably wouldn't like it that much (I find even a fairly simple distilled spirit like Abisinthe Lemercier tastier than e.g. La Fée).

As far as oily mixes go, Muse Verte is definitely up there.. I'd rate it second after La Fee. And it does taste more interesting than a few distilled brands I've had and didn't finish.

Looks like a well thought-out review, Lystie. I'll have to add a bottle to my next order.

Sounds good - my guess from the review is that is contains star anise and maybe angelica (which adds a lovely floral flavor). I'll have to put it on the list for my next commercial purchase.

I don't see his response as condescending, and it was much more restrained than your review deserved. I have had La Muse Verte absinthe and it is crap. But, like Dinky said, as long as you enjoyed it...
