Numbers can be useful is they are honestly derived. If we are all talking without a major bias, then it isn't a problem. When somebody starts tweaking the stats to make a point, things get ugly.

It is all about intelligent risk assessment and personal responsibility. The way I figure it, my skydiving gives me a tiny amount of added risk, and a huge amount of fun. To me, it is worth it. My odds of a fatal double malfunction (main & reserve parachutes) is about on par with getting hit by lightning. It is added risk, because I already have the same general risk of lightning as everyone else. I can deal with that.

If I lived at home like a hermit, I would be safer from outside threats, but I'd probably end up going nuts, which isn't too healthy either.
