We Sheepses made it to Holland. We are now jet-lagged and somewhat slightly dazed, but showered and otherwise put together. The little city beckons.

We arrived in the middle of a blizzard. Something like two-and-a-half inches fell and the whole city shut down for four or five hours. The welcome party got diverted and delayed, but we found him in the long run. Time for beers.

De Hopduvel in Ghent is also a really good place (plus they've got a great beer supermarket jut around the corner).

If you're into distilled liquids, there are great "Jenever" (grain spirit) joints in Antwerp and Ghent (and, of course, Hasselt).

Just for the record, "jenever" is what single-handedly prevented absinthe to become as popular as in France in the 19th century.

Wrong friggin' country.

They've gone overboard in compensating for their calvinistic austerity in some domains, but not for long enough. and their unabashed mercantilism will prevent them from *ever* making decent beer (or absinthe, for that matter) for a very long time.

Chez Broeder Lambic - don't remember the adress, but it's just behind the city hall of St-Gilles, Bruxelles. Oh, those happy days when I lived five minutes walk from that place.

Rue de Savoie. Just one minute away from a very dear friend, in rue André Bréart.

They have excellent Lambic beers -- though I haven't always had success in making foreigners like the krieks (especially the really sour ones) they serve.

Lemme see -- fives minutes from there? That can only mean the St-Gilles prison, right?

Not in the internet cafe, but in my friend's living room, sipping a Grolsch tall-boy and chatting. The trip has been good so far, and I've fulfilled my life-long goal: getting drunk in the oldest gay bar in Amsterdam. (Most of the whores we saw in the red light district were singularly unappealing.)

It's a pretty little city, this one. And EuroFuckyLand is nice in its way. It has been way too long since I've been here.
